Upper Mustang was forbidden to outsiders until 1991 so it is also known as the forbidden kingdom. They have their own head of the tribe whom they respect like the king. The local Mustangi people have their own way of living the family life which is quite astonishing for the visitors. Following their ancient funeral rituals they cut the dead body in three parts and feed one part to animals (dogs) other to birds and remaining they flush into the river. The major income source of the Mustnagi people are wool products from sheep while they produce buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple are major source of food.
Trekking in upper Mustang starts after we drive to Pokhara and take a short flight to Jomsom. The Upper Mustang Trekking starts from Kagbeni, the entry point of upper Mustang Region. Kagbeni comprises eye catching natural deserted landscapes and natural beauty which is often compared to heaven of Nepal. The capital of upper Mustang (Lo-manthang) is reached following the banks of Kaligandaki River upstream. There are the thousand years old Buddhist monasteries like Lo-Gekar Gompa and Samye Gompa which is one of the major attractions among the trekkers trekking in this region. The Upper Mustang trek comprises the passing through high peaks, passes, glaciers, and deserted valleys. Most of the houses are made up of from stone and sun baked mud bricks. Another attraction in the Mustang region is the Tiji Festival influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Our trekking trail head further towards Ghiling and Chele towards Jomsom from where we take a morning flight to Pokhara and drive back to Kathmandu.
