- Visit the Roman houses of Caelian Hill
- See the subterranean layers of the Basilica of San Clemente
- Learn the history of Rome, going back in time as you descend into the earth
Rome is a city with thousands of years of history. It has seen the change of cultures and religions, the progress of technology and architectural techniques, and has stood witness to the relentless march of time. No where is this more evident than in the stratigraphic archaeology seen when structures have been built upon the remains of the buildings that came before them. This layering allows you to travel though time as you descend into the earth, moving from early modern history, to the middle ages, and back into antiquity.
On this tour you will visit the Roman houses of Caelian Hill and the Basilica of San Clemente. The Roman houses of Caelian Hill are incredible ancient Roman structures under the church of Saint John and Saint Paul and were rediscovered in 1887. The Basilica of San Clemente is a 12th century Basilica, built upon a medieval church. Further beneath the earth, six meters below the current street level, lies a Roman house and a Mithraic temple. See history frozen in layers of rock and have an experience you will never forget with Cristina Giannicchi’s Underground Rome Tour.
