Trip Info
The development of this marble, artful, masterpiece, is credited to the Mughal sovereign Shah Jahan, who raised this mausoleum in the memory of his dearest wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, famously known as Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away in AH 1040 (AD 1630). Her last wish was for her spouse to construct a tomb in her memory unlike anything the world has ever seen. Hence, ruler Shah Jahan set about building this story-like wonder. The development of Taj Mahal began in AD 1631 and finished at the end of 1648 AD. For seventeen years, twenty thousand laborers were said to have worked on it daily. For their convenience, a residential area, named after the late ruler Mumtazabad, now known as Taj Ganj, was built. Amanat Khan Shirazi was the calligrapher of Taj Mahal. His name appears at the end of an engraving, on one of the entryways of the Taj. Writer Ghyasuddin composed the verses on the headstone, while Ismail Khan Afridi of Turkey was the vault creator. Muhammad Hanif was the superintendent of Masons. The fashioner of Taj Mahal was Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The material was acquired from all over Asia, and it took an army of 1000 elephants to transport it to the site. The main vault is 187 feet high at the core. Red sandstone was brought from Fatehpur Sikri, jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China, turquoise from Tibet, lapis Lazuli and sapphire from Sri Lanka, coal and carnelian from Arabia, and precious stones from Panna. Every one of the 28 extraordinary, semi-valuable and valuable stones were utilized for trim work within the Taj Mahal. The main building material, white marble, was brought from the quarries of Makrana, in Nagaur district, Rajasthan.
