  • An unashamed resort, Sorrento is still a civilized old town. Even the souvenirs are a cut above the norm, with plenty of fine old shops selling ceramics, lacework and intarsio (marquetry items) – famously produced here. The main drawback is the lack of a proper beach; the town straddles the cliffs overlooking the water to Naples and Mt Vesuvius.
  • A stark reminder of the malign forces that lie deep inside Vesuvius, Pompeii (Pompei in Italian) is Europe’s most compelling archaeological site and one of Italy’s most visited tourist attractions. Each year about 2.5 million people pour in to wander the ghostly shell of what was once a thriving commercial centre.
  • Positano is the coast’s most picturesque and photogenic town, with steeply-stacked houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta colours. No less colourful are its steep streets and steps lined with wisteria-draped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable boutiques.

Trip Info

Join us on a shore excursion in Naples, the ruins of Pompeii, part of an ancient Roman city destroyed and buried by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. can be visited during this tour. The remainder of the uncovered city is today buried under the new Pompeii rebuilt many years subsequent to the eruption. Archaeological excavations are open to the public between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00 every day of the week, on request a licensed guide can be arranged for Pompeii tour. Please note that since Pompeii is a popular area for tourists, we strongly recommend being cautious of your belongings!

To reach the international town of Sorrento you need to drive the coastal road to its furthest point. Spectacular views of the entire bay of Naples and the Island of Capri (that was once joined to Sorrento) are revealed as the Amalfi coast road emerges from over the mountain cliff. A short drive through the town before you arrive in the centre – a major shopping mall for the local people as well as tourists, with many shops (normally open between 09:00am – 13:00 then 16:00 – 20:00, approximately). Sorrento, also being a city from the past, has an interesting history museum “Correale di Terranova” that can be visited in the morning.

Driving down-hill directly through Positano descending the winding one-way road, bypassing many local restaurants, leads to the heart of the town – the busy central Piazza dei Mulini that is connected to a narrow downhill path and some occasional flights of steps that lead to the seafront. At Piazza dei Mulini, you must leave the car as all streets leading to the waterfront are for pedestrians only. These streets also lead to the cathedral, shops selling ceramics, lemons, shoes and “Positano fashion” clothing.. There is a short walk back uphill in order to return to the car and this time, ascending the mountain, returning to the main coastal road to start the journey back to boat.
