Trip Info

One of the Indian Himalaya’s most spectacular and diverse mountain bicycle trips, we cycle on and off-road to some of Ladakh’s most unique regions, including the desert-like Nubra Valley, the green high salt lakes region of Ladakh, the Indus Valley and otherworldly Tso Kar Lake.

The scenery throughout the cycling trip is breathtakingly beautiful, the campsites idyllic, the roads mostly smaller country roads (with a few of the scenic sections along the Leh Manali road) and we’ll see few tourists as we explore some of the Indian Himalaya’s most interesting regions. Plenty of time for chai in small villages, shopping at local fruit markets and cold beers in the evenings at our secluded campsites.

Starting our journey in Leh, we cycle part way over the Kardung La (marketed as ‘the world’s highest motorable pass, but not) into the desert world of Nubra, cycling along the green and mighty Shayok River towards the border of Pakistan. Nubra is renown for its ancient Buddhist monasteries, its sand dunes and Bactrian camels and its oasis like villages, far removed from the bustle of Ladakh.

Crossing the Wari La (5000+ meters) back into the Indus valley, we cycle along idyllic roads to visit a hidden lake, the turquoise Tsomoriri Lake and the salt lake, Tso Kar. En route we’ll drink salt-butter tea and camp with Tibetan and Ladakhi nomads, visit traditional Ladakhi villages and explore the northern reaches of the Indian Himalaya.

Kashmir Extension
While you’re in Ladakh, do some extra exploring! Tour Srinagar, Kashmir, the famous lakes with their colorful floating markets and shikaras (long-tail boats), either flying in and out of Srinagar or opting for a stunningly beautiful jeep safari over the renown Koji La pass to Leh and Ladakh for a tour of the Indus Valley and its many Buddhist monasteries. We base our tours in Srinagar, where you stay in style on traditional houseboats on the lake, visit the floating market, old Srinagar and its many mosques and markets and the famous Mughal gardens.

Kamzang Journeys

Kamzang Journeys is owned and operated by Kim Bannister, an American expat and traveler of 25+ years who is based in Kathmandu, Nepal (spring, autumn and sometimes winter) & Leh, India (summer). Kamzang Journeys is a registered LLC in the USA. The inspiration for Kamzang Journeys originated in Ladakh, where Kim and team have been trekking for 15+ years. It came from trekking through sparkling river valleys of sculpted ochre, mustard and moss-green rocks under soaring Himalayan peaks, through green, nomadic pasture lands peppered with nomadic yak-hair tents under a canopy of endless blue skies. Our passion for these regions inspired us to make a lifestyle of leading treks and bicycle trips through Nepal, India, Tibet and Bhutan, later adding Mongolia and newly Pakistan to the list. All of our Kamzang team shares our love of these Himalayan regions, of the adventure of trekking, of exploring far-flung villages, sipping salt-butter tea in local houses, of camping with the nomads as they round up their flocks of sheep, goats and yaks, of watching for snow leopard and kiang as we journey through remote plateaus on the border of Nepal and Tibet, of bicycling through some of Bhutan's most breathtakingly beautiful regions.
