  • Visit Mount Vesuvius - the only active volcano on the eastern seaboard. Frequent eruptions have been recorded since Pompeii was destroyed notably in 512 AC, in 1631, six times in the 18th century, and then again in 1906, 1929, and 1944.
  • Climb the volcano! You have the choice to climb Mount Vesuvius (approximately 50 minutes) and walk around the crater at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters). You will see amazing panoramic views from the summit, with the beautiful Bay of Naples from east to west. Peering down into the depths of the crater you will be able to see smoke and steam issuing from the sleeping, but still active volcano. A medium to high level of fitness is required to complete the climb. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes!

Trip Info

In this private shore excursion we will pick you up in Naples and transport you to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius in one of our luxury vehicles. This is a historic tour of Pompeii and the volcano that buried it under lava and ashes more than 2000 years ago,  the amazing Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the eastern shore of the Bay of Naples.

Pompeii is one of the most fascinating places on earth, an entire Roman city preserved and buried under tons of debris and ashes. Following the eruption of the volcano in the year 79 AD, Pompeii laid forgotten for almost two millennia allowing it to keep its remains almost completely intact. You will be able to discover the past prosperity of the town in the Roman villas, bathhouses and temples that have since been unearthed.

Founded in the IV or early V century BC, Pompeii turned into a Roman colony by 80 BC and soon became a prosperous port and summer resort for the wealthy. Composed of hundreds of villas, temples, theatres and baths, the ruins were first discovered in 1748 and have under gone an extensive and careful process of excavation and conditioning.

After exploring the ancient ruins and enjoying traditional Italian pizza your tour will take you to the base of Mount Vesuvius to see first-hand  the source of the devastation that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum over two thousand years ago. The sides of Vesuvius, even though deeply scarred by lava flow, are extremely fertile and dotted with villages and vineyards that produce the famous Lachryma Christi Red wine.

We will return you to your Port around 5.00pm –  just in time for dinner!
