Trip Info

Take a walking tour through the Shanty Town that Haku Tours sponsors! We at Haku Tours want you to see the ‘real Lima’, and how the people of Lima truly live. Take a walk up the famous "yellow stairs" and along narrow cute roads, visit a local kindergarten, silverware factory and the friendly families from this nice community. The town’s huge dimensions and breathtaking views are impressive for any visitor.

Upon arrival, you will be told about security precautions and some basic guidelines to follow while on the tour. While we know ‘shanty towns’ do have a reputation, we want you to feel 100% safe at all times.

While you slowly make your way to the base of the hill, our guide will explain a little about the community and its developments, the urbanization projects, politics, religion and how Haku helps in the area. Gradually, you will begin your journey up the ‘yellow stairs’, pause for a few pictures of the amazing views in greater Lima, get a glimpse into homes, and interact with neighbors and families we meet during this local life experience.

Stopping along the way to take photos of typical homes, see first-hand the smiling children and hard-working families of Lima. You will meet a local craftsman who produces beautiful hand-made silverware and you can even purchase his silverware to support the local community!

On your way down the hill, you will visit a local kindergarten (*not open on weekends but you might meet some of these children while they are playing on the streets), where you have the opportunity to be a part of the local activities, such as volleyball or football, with the local children.

Your adventure awaits!

Tripadvisor “Haku Tours is the ONLY way to see Peru!”
My wife and I had the amazing opportunity to visit Lima back in December and we loved Edwin and Haku tours so much that we booked our final day in Lima with them again. Haku was recommended by some friends we met on a cruise. The cruise was in Lima for 2-days and our friends had booked the Shanty Town tour, paragliding, downtown tour and surf lessons, so we decided to join them. We were glad we did!

The day started with Edwin promptly picking us up in a nice air conditioned van at the pier. They drove us out to the Shanty town while sharing the history and culture of Lima. We stopped at a market and had a chance to meet the locals selling fruit and other goods. Upon arrival at the Shanty Town, we were able to purchase some cereal to hand out to the kids. Edwin explained how this helps the local economy and the kids love it. Please know that there was no pressure from Edwin for us to do this and we did it on our own compulsion. This was a very touching experience that changed all of us forever.

After the Shanty Town tour, Edwin took us to the beautiful Miraflores beach area. There we all had a chance to paraglide over the beautiful scenery.

The next day, Edwin picked us up promptly and took us on a very personal tour of downtown Lima. We saw all of the amazing sites and more! Passengers from the cruise ship who paid twice as much as us for the same tour saw half as much as us. One highlight was the catacombs under the San Francisco church.

We then went for surf lessons and Pisco Sours! We had a blast!

Yesterday, we arrived back in Lima after a few weeks. Edwin picked us up at almost 2am at the airport and transferred us to our hotel. The next day, he picked us up and took us to see the Pachacamac pyramids and ruins. We then had a delicious lunch at a local restaurant and then went wine tasting. The wine is very sweet in Peru, so my wife loved it.

We ended our trip with a visit to see the water park with the fountains. This was very cool and nicely done. Edwin picked us up promptly and dropped us off at the airport.

We already miss Edwin and all the great things that he and Haku tours are doing in Peru.
