Rasnov Fortess is Romania’s oldest military fortress built on the southern part of Transylvania more than 2000 years ago by the ancient Romanian civilization, the Dacians.
Known back then under the name of COMIDAVA , it keeps the original name for a little bit over 200 years when, the Roman Emperor Trajan conquered Dacia in 106 AD and changed its name to CUMIDAVA.
With the fall of the empire by the end of the 5th century AD, the place was abandoned until the end of the 13th century when it was rebuilt by the Teutonic Knights and about 100 years later restored by the Saxons.
Extremely well positioned, it was never sacked, the very reason why it was often used by the kings of Europe as a retirement place.
In the 1960′s and 1970′s it was used the Romanian film academy as a movie set and most most recent by Hollywood. Some of the most famous movies filmed there are: Return to the Cold Mountain , Ghost Rider II and not so long ago Scorpion King 4.
