Trip Info

This walking tour follows the route of the old Derby to Manchester railway line along what is now the Monsal Trail. It opened in the 1860s and closed in the 1960s and was one of the most scenic lines in the UK, passing through the heart of Derbyshire and the Peak District.

Beginning at Wyedale, near Buxton, the walk follows a quiet wooded valley to reach the start of the Monsal Trail at Blackwell Mill. It follows south to the former busy junction station at Miller’s Dale. The trail then continues on through the spectacular limestone dales to the famous viaduct in Monsal Dale. It continues on through tranquil farmland to finish at the popular tourist town of Bakewell, home of the famous pudding. Along the way, the walk passes the remains of the many industries that grew up along the railway and the stations that used to serve the different communities along the route.

At each stage of the walk, time is taken, not just to enjoy the views that made the railway one of the most scenic lines in the country, but to also tell the story of the building and operation of the line. This includes not just the buildings, bridges, tunnels and trains but also some of the many characters involved.
