- Mild currents
- Unusual critters
- Chance of manta ray
Phuket’s easiest diving site is popular for beginners and divers who’ve been out of the water for a while. That’s not to say experienced divers shouldn’t give it a try, there’s plenty to find in the crystal clear water and there’s always the chance of a passing giant manta ray.
The dive sites have some great topography, reminiscent of the Similan Island national Park. There’s giant granite boulders at Banana Rock and all up the West side of the island. The staghorn beds at depth are some of the healthiest in the region although the shallow areas will seem a bit barren to some.
Racha Yai is almost devoid of coral but great efforts have been made to place artificial structures in all the bays around the island and Bay 1 has 5 small ship wrecks as well as a motorbike that mysteriously appeared a few years back. Although very little coral has taken hold of the artificial reef it still attracts lots of unusual animals.
