Ayni Peru Expedition’s Quelccaya trek is a remote and unique route to Marcapata. Get your start in the high-altitude region of Killacocha, before descending at a leisurely pace through a variety of microclimates, only to arrive in the high jungle town of Marcapata. Hike along the Quelccaya Ice Field and pass isolated communities along the way. Marcapata is a colonial town featuring a fascinating church, excellent thermal baths, and breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys.
We will depart early in the morning for our trek departure point of Killacocha, at approximately 4,800 msnm. The drive is approximately 6 hours, with the final half along a remote, unpaved road. This is a long ride, but the scenery is beautiful and we have a good chance of spotting wild vicunas along the way. We will have lunch in Killacocha before beginning the hike to our campsite at Mormorani.

Our route on this day will take us along beautifully blue Lake Sibinacocha, with snowcapped peaks surrounding us. We will camp near Yayamari on this night.

In the morning we will have the option of climbing Yayamari before continuing on to Cascara. Yayamari is a challenging climb with a peak a 5,500 msnm, and we will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Sibinacocha. We will camp for the night below Cascara Pass, at 5,053 msnm. Distance:12km/ 7hrs
After breakfast we will begin the hike to our campsite at Ayniwasi, located in a broad, high-altitude valley (4, 855 msnm).

We will depart early in the morning for the community of Parina. The day begins with a tough climb to Yanacasa pass, at 5,175 msnm. As we ascend we will enjoy increasing interesting views of surrounding glacial fields and colorful yet barren hillsides. At the pass we will be only a few meters from the ice fields, with magnificent views of the valleys below us. From the pass we will descend to out campsite for the night, at 4, 811 msnm.Quelccaya

In the morning we will begin a long and gentle descent to our high jungle end point. We will pass high pampas with grazing llamas and alpacas, glacial streams and snowcapped mountains before reaching our relatively lush and warm campsite at Ataotambo.

After breakfast we will continue our descent along an original Inca trail. The landscape will become increasing lush as we arrive at our pickup point in the town of Marcapata. In town we will have the opportunity to bathe in the local hotsprings and visit the beautiful local church and cemetery before beginning the drive back to Cusco.
