This tour is exactly as our Pre-Viking Era Tour, but a guided visit to a local Romanesque Church is also included.
Step back in time to the pre-Viking era with this history tour. This is the region of Uppland 1400 years ago, a society in which war was viewed as a most honourable matter and in which slavery is a pure normality. Between 500 and 600 AD, powerful local lords ruled what became the Swedish kingdom. The lords controlled different big villages and struggled for power over one another.
The Vendel age of Sweden was an epoch that laid the foundation of Sweden’s Viking age. The Vendel age is, in many ways, an historic secret, put in the shadow of the Viking age. It is a very interesting society after all. It has left mighty traces in the Uppland province, a province just north of Stockholm. Huge burial mounds are the legacy of the mighty lords and the excavation findings reveal a life of luxury.
We look forward to guiding you on a tour that covers a visit to the great burial mounds of Vada, where we will tell you about the Pre-Viking settlement of Vada. Learn the social customs of the rich of Pre-Viking Vada, the burial rituals of the period, the Pagan religion and the handcrafts and trade. You will come to understand the importance for the Viking age, the foundation that the Vendel age built.
