Trip Info

First we take a pretty drive out to La Punta Ahuano, making a pit stop in Misahualli to visit and feed grapes to the playful monkeys that hang out in town and on their river beach. From La Punta Ahuano, we’ll take a motor canoe to a lodge with the most outstanding views of the jungle and river below. The pictures don’t really do it justice. After lunch at the lodge we’ll take a walk or hike out into the rainforest where your guide will point out and explain about jungle plants and any animals that you may encounter. After dark, we’ll take a night jungle walk looking for nocturnal animals and insects. There’s a great little area close to the lodge where a variety of rainforest frogs can be seen.

The next day you’ll get up early for a predawn walk down to the riverbank and out into the jungle to watch the birds take off at first light. THEN after breakfast we’ll do something that a lot of our guests really enjoy and find very interesting, a chocolate and chicha making demonstration. Martha, the mother of the owner of the lodge, lives on the island across the river from the lodge. We’ll go over to the island where she, or a member of her family, will show you how it’s done, right there under a shelter, on her little farm. You’ll get to see how chocolate is made, all the way from breaking open the cacao pod to tasting the final product, which she makes into what is most likely the most delicious fondue you’ve ever tasted. We’ll bring along strawberries and bananas for a special treat! After the demonstration we’ll take the motor canoe downriver to an amazing butterfly farm, followed by a picnic lunch at a river beach and another pit stop at an island where we sometimes spot woolly monkeys, before heading farther downriver by motor canoe to an animal rehab center. After that….awww, we drive back to Tena, tour over. How about inflatable kayaking the next day, or a hike up to beautiful Latas Waterfall!?

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour! A perfect overview of the jungle. We were trying to cram a lot in a short amount of time during our trip to Ecuador and we came across Gary’s Overnight Jungle Tour. It was just what we needed and at a very reasonable price! Gary provided so many wonderful experiences in his two full days with the overnight. We were extremely happy with the results. Several of the other short tours that I was considering had two nights in the jungle, but only limited activities for the days. Gary is very entertaining and informative and has put together a nice variety of activities. We kept busy but also had time to relax in the hammocks at the beautiful lodge overlooking the river perched high above the river. Our whole family enjoyed everything about this tour: the river transport, feeding the monkeys, sloshing through the jungle learning lots of new things and tasting ants, bird watching, amazing chicha and chocolate demo, a really cool butterfly farm with hatching cocoons, and an interesting visit to an animal rehab. All of this with a very amiable personal guide and wonderful accommodations and food. A huge thumbs up! We are only sorry that we did not have more time to linger and try some of his other tours. Thank you so much! We highly recommend Gary’s tour and hope to return someday.
