Trip Info

This introductory tour is designed for those with an interest in the Cathars. We will discuss and explore techniques of medieval warfare, castle architecture, heraldry, feudalism, the role of the Catholic Church, the Count of Toulouse, Occitan culture, medieval politics and source documents.

Your history tour will begin in the evening as you are invited to the Château Saint-Ferriol for refreshments and to meet others on the tour before a dinner at the Chateau.

In the morning, we head through the Corbiéres to visit the castle at Termes. After lunch at the Abbey town of Lagrasse, we will visit the castle at Arques. You will be treated to a special dinner at a local gourmet restaurant.

On day three, we travel towards Fontfroide, a restored Cistercian abbey that played an important role in the Albigensian Crusade. After lunch, we will visit the castle of Villerouge and return to your hotel for a break. Enjoy a supper of Renaissance recipes at the Chateau.

In the morning, we drive into the Ariege and climb to the iconic Castle of Montségur. We visit the museum and have lunch in the village of Montsegur. Explore the Château at Puivert in the afternoon.

The fifth day is yours to enjoy local markets, food or wine.

In the morning, we explore Carcassonne, a World Heritage Site and the largest surviving medieval walled city in Europe. After lunch, we visit the Chateau Comtal, the Viscounts’ castle. Return to hotel for overnight.

The next day, we visit the city of Toulouse. After lunch, we visit more historical sites before returning to the hotel.
