The old Jewish community had a great relevance in Oporto. In several fields such as society, religion, and especially economics, from the late 15th Century became a marginalized and outcasted group by the Portuguese King D. Manuel I, who ordered their mandatory deportation or rapid conversion to New Christians, abandoning their religious principles in which they were educated. Three centuries later, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal, also decreed a second exhile of this community, which was intrinsically related to the education system in Portugal. In this private tour, we will travel to ancient alleys and sidewalks where the Jews lived in Porto and established commercial activity. Visit the site of the old Jewish quarter of the city core and their burial grounds, in Garden of Virtudes.
