Trip Info

Eating safe organically raised food is a growing trend. But wild fisheries is in decline. How can we reverse this trend and become more connected with our food source?

We live in a non-linear world. So called ‘Freak Waves’ can be over 30m tall. Fish population collapses occur in a non-linear fashion. Our hypothesis is that equally marine restoration can occur in non-linear manner. Our workshop is an invitation to learn more about this, and become a practical party to this ground breaking project.

Our 3-day workshop appeals to anybody interested in fishing, marine life, and new perspectives. During your voyage you will learn how to grow more fish, explore laws of nature, make a personalized marine enhancement module, and contribute to a Community Reef.

REAF offers an opportunity for anyone from anywhere to help restore a balance of marine life abundance in our seas. (Maori : kia wharite – restoring the balance). Up until this time in history, mankind has seen marine life as a resource to exploit. This voyage focuses on changing this perspective and learning how to respect nature and enhance marine life.

We begin our experience with the Tiaki Moana nature observation tour, laying the foundation for the next three days. This is followed by a more in-depth discussion about artificial reef building projects throughout the world and the differentiating principles behind our unique ‘seabed enhancement model’. Over the course of three days, you will gain practical reef module building experience and work with varied reef deployment methods. This workshop program is designed to teach you the skills such that you can easily construct reef modules in your own backyard, deploy them from a recreational fishing boat, and become one more person partnering with nature to grow more fish in the sea.

Your adventure awaits!

REAF (sea ranching) and The Wharf Hub (accommodation) co-exist on the same property in Opotiki, Eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Established in 2007, its a unique venture to promote the concept of mankind working with nature to create abundance. If the sea dies, then a part of us dies too. Fish stocks decline despite best scientific management. Could there be other factors at work? Experience our interactive workshops and decide for your self.
