Trip Info

The Machame route is our most popular and successful route leading to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Hikers sleep in tents which are carried up the mountain by support crews. The Machame route is a very scenic and beautiful route, which can be completed in 6 days, however, we strongly recommend hiking the route in 7 days, allowing for more time to acclimatize. The key to the success of the Machame route is its topography, allowing hikers to climb high and sleep low, helping towards better acclimatization. There are however two drawbacks on this route:
Firstly hikers will need to pass an area just before the Shira ridge and hike the Barranco Wall, both of which are physically demanding and also present a potential problem for hikers with a fear of heights.

Day 1 Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Machame Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,840ft)

Depart after breakfast from Hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Machame gate 1800Mt.

Day 2 Machame Camp – Shira Camp

After breakfast, hike east on the Shira Plateau before reaching Junction between Lemosho Route and Machame Route at 4435Mt

Right midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike by the light of your headlamp for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point.

The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring.
The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, make sure you have captured a picture for your memory before the beginning of the descent to Base Camp Barafu and later further to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru there is a great view of the mountain, crater, clouds, and glaciers.

At Barafu Camp your Branch will have a short break. As you still have another three to four hours descent further to Mweka Camp dinner overnight.
