Trip Info

This excursion consists of a day trip out to the elephant sanctuary at Pinnawala and the hill capital of Kandy.

The tour will begin by vising an elephant sanctuary, one of the largest elephant orphanages, where abandoned and orphaned elephants are being looked after. They rear elephants that were separated from their herds due to the human-elephant conflict or by falling into pits. Most of them are baby elephants. The elephants are fed at the orphanage and bathed in the nearby river twice a day, which is always an unforgettable experience.

Afterwards, we proceed to Kandy, the hill capital of Sri Lanka which was founded in the 14th century AD. Learn about its history and how it was the last kingdom of the regal Sri Lankan Kings before it fell in to the hands of the British in 1815. We will visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a heritage site which houses the sacred Tooth Relic of “Lord Buddha.” It is the most significant building in the city and is a place of veneration for Buddhists the world over. The journey to Kandy presents the traveler with an idea of what Sri Lanka has to offer with regard to the landscape and scenery. Excursions can be made to the Royal Botanical Gardens as well as the Arts & Crafts Center in Kandy. The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya is well-known for its large number and variety of plants: ornamental, decorative, useful & medicinal. More than 4000 species are found here, including indigenous and introduced plants. This garden is best known for having the largest collection of orchids in Asia. Afterwards, we will return to Colombo.
