The Island Peak Trek is a Himalayan trekking excursion for those looking to take on something a little more demanding than your average trek. The peak is over 6,000 m high and is a 20-day guided trip, which includes a full itinerary visiting the best sites in Kathmandu.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be met by a representative and taken to your hotel in the Thamel district of Kathmandu. The next day will be a full day of sightseeing in Kathmandu. First, head for the “Monkey” Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the must-see sights of the Valley. Climb the 365 steps up to the Stupa where there is much to see and three large Buddha statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Chenrezig and Guru Rinpoche. In the afternoon, visit the Durbar Square in Kathmandu.
On the third day of the trip, take a spectacular flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and enter the Khumba region where you will spend the next two weeks trekking. This will be your first day in the mountains, taking you down to the Dudh Koshi River. Spend the night at Monjo. In the morning, take a short trek into the Sagamartha National Park. Continue up the Dudh Koshi River until you reach the 120 m long Swiss-built suspension bridge. Cross the bridge and begin the hard ascent to Namche Bazaar where you will spend two days for acclimatization. Day five of your trip will be an acclimatization day that you can use as a rest day or take an optional walk up past the landing strip and on towards the Everest view hotel where you will get your first glorious views of the peaks of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse and Everest.
On the sixth day, take a trail out of Namche Bazaar, which eventually runs down to the Imja Khola River before deeply ascending up to the village of Tengboche with it’s picturesque monastery. Arrive early afternoon and take a rest before visiting the monastery to sit in on the 4 o’clock puja ceremony. After spending the night in Tengboche, head up the trail along the Imja Khola River as you gradually make your way above the tree line. Your next destination is the village of Dingboche. You will spend another acclimatization day here and be offered another optional walk to the village of Chukkung. This walk rewards you with an all around panoramic view with stunning views of Ama Dablam, Island Peak and Nuptse ridge.
Day nine will take you from Dingboche through Dughla and up over the demanding Thokla pass. From here you will have a stunning view of Pumo Ri, Lingtren and Khumbutse with Kala Pataar below. Spend the night at Lobuche. After leaving Lobuche follow the glacier up to Gorak Shep. As you ascend the Lobuche pass get a view of Everest again. Set up tents at the Base Camp at Gorak Shep. Days 11 and 12 will be spent crossing the Kongma La to Chhukung. On days 13, 14 and 15, establish Base Camp and high camp and climb Island Peak. On Days 16, 17 and 18 you will return to Lukla.
Day 19 is your second sightseeing day in Kathmandu, starting at Kopan Monastery perched majestically looking over the Kathmandu Valley. Spend the day visiting various monuments and points of interest before your farewell dinner in the evening. Eat at an excellent traditional Nepalese restaurant. Depart Kathmandu on day 20, after some more sightseeing or shopping, if your departure flight time allows it. We will say goodbye at your departure terminal.
