Trip Info

This tour takes in numerous stops key stops across the Somme and Ypres and allows us to discuss a variety of key themes to build up your overall knowledge of the First World War. We discuss the process of recruitment and building a new army through to battle strategy and some of the tactics used. Ultimately we gain a new and deep respect for the individuals that went to war and in too many cases, didn’t come home.

Stops include:

Tyne Cot – the largest Commonwealth War Graves site in the world; a truly heartbreaking site

Menin Gate – attend the moving and memorable Last Post service, an act of remembrance that has taken place every night since 1928

Beaumont Hamel – walk through original British trenches and see just how close the opposing armies were to each other

Sheffield Memorial Park – hear the personal stories of the Pals’ battalions and their disastrous attack on 1st July 1916

Thiepval Memorial to the Missing – the stunning Lutyens memorial bears the names of more than 72,000 men who have no known grave
