  • The Jatunyaku for big waves, age 13 yrs. and up, or the Anzu for more of a float down calm waters. The Anzu, age 8 and up, is great for families.
  • Anyone can do this! If you choose inflatable kayaking on the Jatunyaku, know that there are 2 seats in each kayak. An expert will be guiding each one.
  • At least one guide will speak English at an advanced level. Guide and safety kayakers are trained in whitewater safety and are licensed professionals.
  • If we pass by someone fishing with a net or panning for gold, we'll stop and ask if you can give it a try. (They've always said yes!)

Trip Info

Going inflatable kayaking is our number one most popular tour! It’s just too much fun! Getting out on the rivers in Ecuador is a must do when visiting this country. Either one of the rivers we run, deliver breathtaking views of the rainforest. It’s just awesome! If action is what you want, the Upper Napo River, aka the Jatunyaku, meaning “Big Water” in Kichwa delivers big waves and lots of adventure. If you don’t want to get too wet and are looking for a more relaxing time floating through pools and smaller to no rapids, choose the Anzu (see note below). The amount of rain the night before will also determine the level, i. e. how high and fast the rivers will run on our day. If we happen to see anyone panning for gold or fishing with nets, we will stop and ask them if they mind giving you a try at it. No one has ever said no so far! If you have never been in an inflatable kayak before, you will find them extremely sturdy and while being an easier and safer option for beginners, advanced kayakers will also find them to be a really fun way to go downriver. Safety is first, so rest assured, you will be given a comprehensive safety briefing. You will be fitted with life jackets and helmets. Each kayak has two seats, either Gary or a safety kayaker will be in the back seat of each kayak, to ensure maximum safety. (If you want to man your own kayak on the Jatunyaku, Gary will need to approve you first.) The first person who books this tour, gets to decide which river we go on that day. Once the first person has booked, we will note on the tour for that day, which river we will be running.

Please note that the Anzu is a nice calm river, right up to the last 60 seconds. The Jatunyaku recently changed course and now joins it a little farther up. So the last 60 seconds is now like the rockin’ Jatunyaku. You needn’t worry, however, Gary or your safety kayaker will safely guide you right around those big waves!

If you want to go rafting instead of inflatable kayaking, we can do that!

Gary was one of the best people I met during my trip to Ecuador! I was traveling on a tight timeframe and Gary and Michelle helped me pack in as much as I possibly could, including this great kayaking trip. It was a full day of very fun kayaking and included a great lunch at around the halfway point. I would absolutely recommend this tour and anything else with Gary!

I went inflatable kayaking with Gary and 3 other guides. Each person had their own guide in the kayak with them so I felt completely safe (I had no previous experience on rapids). The tour was great – we went on level 2 rapids which weren’t too extreme but yet quite exciting. Apparently, different levels of rapids are available according to your previous experience. Beautiful scenery along the way. A buffet style lunch was provided which was plentiful and was absolutely delicious!! As I couldn’t arrive on time for the tour (which I knew well in advance), Gary and Michelle went above and beyond to accommodate my schedule by delaying the start time of the tour for over an hour. They contacted the 3 other people on the tour well ahead of of time to explain the situation and ensure that it wouldn’t be a problem for anyone. We had lots of laughs on the tour and the kindness and service provided was exceptional! I would recommend this tour to anyone!! Thank you Michelle and Gary!

Loved this kayaking experience! Gary was unavailable so he aranged for guides Tarquino and Javier who were brilliant. Not only did we spend the morning kayaking through some of Jatunyacu’s rapids, we stopped to see some gold panning and explore a canyon. Our lunch was delicious and we laughed the whole way of the last leg of the trip. Thanks for a memorable day!

Gary was terrific! We took a white water rafting tour with him, which we are still talking about. Gary put a strong emphasis on safety, but allowed us to challenge ourselves in the rapids. It was rip-roaring fun! We were particularly impressed with the kindness Gary and his assistant showed the local people when we stopped for lunch. This is a really nice guy, who knows what he’s doing, and is enthusiastic about sharing a beautiful river with visitors. Definitely take this tour!!
