DAY 1 Transfer to Bucharest
Arrival at Henri Coanda International Airport and transfer to the hotel in Bucharest. Meet your English speaking guide at the airport and on the way to the hotel he will present you the tour and he will give you all the practical information about the exchange rates, Romanian food and restaurants. Overnight in a centrally located hotel.
DAY 2 Bucharest – Curtea de Arges – Sibiu
In the morning, after breakfast, leave the hotel for a sightseeing tour and the visit the Parliament’s Palace, also known as The People’s House, the second largest administrative building in the world. During the tour you will also see The Revolution Square, The Opera Square, Victoria Avenue and the Triumphal Arch. Leave Bucharest and drive to Curtea de Arges, the former capital city of Wallachia. Visit the two old churches (St. Nicholas, part of the Medieval Royal Court and Curtea de Arges Monastery, the burial site of the Romanian Royal Family). Before crossing one of the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains – over 6000 feet – on Transfagarasan highway, stop at Poienari and visit the fortress of prince Vlad the Impaler. There are, though, 1500 steps to climb to get to the fortress!!! This mountain road is open only from July to the end of September, so for the rest of the year we use the alternative road of Olt River Valley. Arrival in Sibiu in the late afternoon, accommodation in a centrally located hotel.
DAY 3 Sibiu – Alba Iulia – Turda Salt Mine – Cluj Napoca
In the morning, visit the city center of the medieval Sibiu, founded by the Saxon settlers and known also as Hermannstadt. The walking tour will get you to the Small Square, the Liar’s Bridge, the Big Square and to the Lutheran Cathedral. Departure for Alba Iulia – the Union City – and visit the Orthodox Cathedral of the Unification and the old Vauban style fortress. In the afternoon visit Turda Salt Mine, one of the most impressive salt mine in Europe, recently restored and reopened for visiting. Evening arrival in Cluj, the Capital City of Transylvania. Accommodation in a centrally located hotel.
DAY 4 Maramures (Cluj-Napoca – Vadu Izei)
Have a walking tour of the city center, then drive northwards to one of the most picturesque region of the country, Maramures. On the way to the beautiful village of Vadu Izei, drive through several traditional villages and visit some of the typical wooden churches, like Surdesti, Desesti and Budesti. Accommodation in a comfortable B&B and enjoy a typical Maramures home hosted dinner.
DAY 5 Maramures
Spend the day exploring the area, interact with the locals, try their food and culture, discover their traditions, admire the beautiful wooden gates. Visit the unique Merry Cemetery of Sapanta Village, the Museum of the Victims of the Communism from Sighetu Marmatiei, the Village Museum in the same town. Dinner and overnight in Vadu Izei, the same location.
DAY 6 Maramures – Bucovina
Leave Maramures area in the morning. On the way to Moldova Region, drive along the beautiful Iza River Valley, where you can visit some more wooden churches, like Rozavlea, Bogdan Voda and Ieud (the oldest wooden church of Maramures – XIVth century). Later cross the Rodna mountains, the former natural border between Transylvania and Moldova. In the afternoon, have a brake in the village of Vama for an egg painting demonstration (at Mrs. Letitia Orsivschi, one of the greatest egg painter from the region) and then visit the Voronet Monastery, the most beautiful painted monastery from Bucovina, known as the Sisteen Chapel of the East. Accommodation in a hotel in Gura Humorului.
DAY 7 Painted Monasteries
Complete your knowledge about the painted monasteries by visiting another 3 of them: Moldovita, Sucevita and Arbore, all of them being UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the museum of Moldovita Monastery. Here is shown the award given by UNESCO in 1975, the Golden Apple. On the way to Piatra Neamt, you can have an optional stop at Agapia Monastery (built 19th century, painted by the greatest Romanian painter, Nicolae Grigorescu). Accommodation in Piatra Neamt.
DAY 8 Piatra Neamt – Sighisoara
After breakfast, leave the town and come back to Transylvania, crossing the mountains through the spectacular Bicaz Gorges. Starting with the Red Lake – a naturally formed dam lake – you are crossing a region inhabited by a large Hungarian community (also known as the Szeklers). That’s how the names of the towns are written in two languages. In the afternoon, arrival in Biertan, the former residence of the Lutheran Bishops of Transylvania, and visit the fortified church, the most beautiful church of its kind in Romania. In the evening, arrival in Sighisoara and accommodation in a hotel in the medieval fortress.
DAY 9 Sighisoara – Brasov
In the morning visit Sighisoara, the best preserved medieval town of Romania. During the walking tour, you will visit the Church on the Hill, the Clock Tower and Vlad Dracul’s House, the place where in 1431, the famous prince Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) was born. Leave Sighisoara and drive to Bran. Guided tour of the medieval castle, known as Dracula’s Castle – one of the highlights of this trip. Spend some time with the souvenir vendors in the market, then leave for Brasov, one of the most beautiful cities of Transylvania. Accommodation in a hotel in the old town.
DAY 10 Brasov – Sinaia – Bucharest
Visit in the morning the old town of Brasov, including the biggest Gothic cathedral of the Southeast Europe, the Black Church and the amazing museum of the First Romanian School from Scheiquarter. Departure for Sinaia, where you will visit the summer residence of the first royal couple, Peles Castle, one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. After the visit, return to Bucharest for the farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant. Here you will enjoy the best Romanian dishes and a quality folk show. Accommodation in a hotel in the city center.
