Highlights

  • Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408.
  • Ryoanji is famous for its garden considered one of the finest surviving examples of kare-sansui ("dry landscape"), a refined type of Japanese Zen temple garden design.
  • Ikebana (or 'Kado') is a Japanese art of flower arrangement. Anyone can create a fantastic work of art by themselves after acquiring the basic concepts and fundamental skills. Learning Ikebana promotes a better understanding into the Japanese view of nature; a crucial step in appreciating the unique aesthetics of Japanese culture.

Guide

Trip Info

Experience and learn Japanese flower arrangement (‘Kado’ meaning ‘way of the flower’; or ‘Ikebana’ meaning ‘living flowers’) and visit Kyoto’s world cultural heritage at Kinkakuji temple (also known as the Golden Pavilion) and Ryoanji temple: the Temple of the Dragon at Peace. Both are incredible artifacts of Zen Buddhism, and must be experienced first-hand.

Ryoanji temple is a historic monument of ancient Kyoto, which has one of the oldest surviving and finest examples of dry landscaping (‘kare sansui’) gardens. Kinkakuji temple is very old, its history dating back to 1397. Allow a guided experience to illustrate the past of these world cultural heritage monuments, and feel the peace these temples inspire.
