Day trip in the old fortified fishing port of Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. Founded in the 14th century by the Portuguese and occupied by them until the 16th century. At that time it was called Mogador. The architecture is unexpected: blue-shuttered houses, crenelated fortifications and cannons pointed out over the open sea. The city of Essaouira was built by the Alaouite king Sidi Mohamed ben Abdel Allah and designed by the french architect Theodure Cornut in the 18th century. The windswept beach is a spot much appreciated by windsurfers from all over the world. Here, the light marine breeze and unusual calm will fill you with an indefinable peace of mind. See the impressive fortifications, explore the souks, argan oil cooperatives and the carpentry workshops devoted to cedar and thuya wood carving. Visit the old harbour with its stalls of fresh fish. This is a beautiful part of my Morocco.
