Trip Info

Catania, which is the most important city in eastern Sicily, was founded by colonists from Chalcis at the foot of Mount Etna in 728 BC. It played a key-role in the long history of the island in spite of having been struck by different natural catastrophes. Since it was rebuilt in the same site more than one time, Catania has kept the tracks of its ancient and medieval past among the sumptuous Baroque façades of its buildings and churches. Therefore, it became a real art and archaeological treasure. The reconstruction of the city after the 1693 earthquake did not completely erase the vestiges of the ancient Greek-Roman city whose ruins stand out surprisingly among baroque buildings, churches, and convents. Starting from Saint Benedict Monastery, we will have a walk along the streets of Montevergini Hill, which is the site of the ancient acropolis, and we will see the ruins of the theatre, the odèon, and the grandiose perspectives of Via Crociferi (an important street). The tour will continue with the squares of the Cathedral and University in order to discover Vaccarini’s famous architecture. The final destination will be the ruins of the amphitheatre which was defined by Prince Biscari as the most important evidence of the splendour of ancient Catania.
