With a variety of nature centres, swamps, forest and sanctuaries that a variety of bird species call home, Trinidad and Tobago is a dream destination for bird enthusiasts. This bird watching tour will take you to a variety of locations throughout the island, each one offering different birds to see. We will see a wide variety of birds and bird habitats, including one of the most accessible oilbird caves in the world, frigatebirds at Nariva Swamp, 13 of the 17 humming bird species and the scarlet ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago!
Day 1: Arrival
We will greet you at the airport and transfer you to the Asa Wright Nature Centre. We will check in and go through an orientation in preparation for tomorrow.
Day 2: Asa Wright Nature Centre
This amazing day at the Asa Wright Nature Centre begins with a short hike to see the oilbirds in Dunston Cave, one of the most accessible oilbird caves in the world. On our way, we will pass through the deep forest, where we could potentially see the red-crowned ant-tanager, black-face ant-thrush and christed opendula, just to name a few.
In the afternoon, your guide will lead you on a leisurely walk through the cocoa and coffee plantation. You will have the opportunity to see the Trinidad mot mot as well as a variety of other forest species!
Day 3: Blanchisseuse Brasso Seco Bird Tour
This full day tour will take you high into the mountains. We will make frequent stops to spot birds such as the common black hawk and swallow-tailed kite. We will stop for lunch at the village of Brasso Seco. Hidden in Trinidad’s rainforest, this rural community is a must visit for nature lovers!
Day 4: Aripo Agricultural Station/ Night Birds
We will depart first thing in the morning for the Aripo Argicultural Station, located in the foothills of the northern range. As we explore the countryside and rough pasture, we will be able to identify a number of bird species, including: cocoi heron, savannah hawk, gray-headed kite, yellow-headed caracara, wattled jacana, southern lapwig, and more!
We will return to the Asa Wrights Nature Centre for lunch. In the evening, we will return to the Aripo Agricultural Station for some night birding!
Day 5: Nariva Swamp
We will leave for Nariva Swamp early in the morning, stopping at Manzilla Beach for lunch. While eating lunch, look out for the frigatebirds and brown pelicans!
Upon reaching Nariva Swamp, we will embark on a birding tour where we will find a variety of birds as well as red howler and white face capuchin monkeys! Afterwards, we will depart for Matura, where we will spend the night.
Day 6: Grand Riviere
Today’s mission is about finding the pawi! Between March 1st and August 31st, you will have the option of turtle watching as well.
Day 7: Yerette Humming Bird Sanctuary and Winston Nanan Bird Sanctuary Tour
While visiting the Yerette Humming Bird Sanctuary, you will understand why Trinidad and Tobago is known as “Land of the Hummning Bird.” As you explore the sanctuary, you will have the opportunity to see 13 of the 17 species of the humming bird.
The Winston Nana Bird Sanctuary is an amazing sanctuary and a great opportunity to squeeze the last little bit of bird watching on this tour. We will hop aboard a boat and explore the swamp, observing the different species of swamp life. The highlight of this sanctuary is seeing the scarlet ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago.
Day 8: Departure
Depart for Airport.
