Trip Info

On the Potpourri Tour we are going to pass through 5 very different Berlin boroughs. From the housing blocks at Prenzlauer Berg, via the Plattenbauten (a specific ‘socialist’ type of house building) in Hohenschönhausen, this tour takes us to the lakes of Weißensee.
We will pass many worthwhile sites, which are not as famous as the Reichstag etc., but nevertheless present some noteworthy parts of Berlin history. The first stop is the Zeiss Planetarium, and via myriad small stops we will get to the huge area of the former livestock and slaughterhouse buildings, where modern buildings mix with old edifices.
Probably the best-known stop on this tour is the former Stasi building, stretching over several hectares, with the Stasi prison, where prisoners used to be kept under inhumane conditions. We are going to visit the Sportforum, where many German Olympic and world champions trained, e.g. the swimmer Franziska van Almsick. The ice hockey team Berliner Eisbären (Berlin Polar Bears) used to be based here before moving to the O2 World; and the GDR champion club BFC Dynamo has been based here since 1992.
On the way back, we are going to pass old breweries, some of which are still operating, and arrive at the lakes of Weißensee, where we are going to tell you about the area’s quite eventful past. The last stop of this three-to four-hour tour is the cultural venue Brotfabrik.
