After dropping your bags off at your riad, you will have the rest of the day to walk through the heart of the city at your leisure. This bustling, exotic city center has just about everything you could hope for: dancers, snake-charmers, jugglers, and narrators. Once you have been entertained, make sure you stroll through the gardens and historic locales.
Day 2: Telouet- Ouarzazate
Its time to hit the trails! We will hop in our 4WD vehicle and depart for Ouarzazate via Taddart Village. A highlight of this day is the Tizi n’Tishka pass. At an elevation of 7237 ft, this pass essentially divides the High Atlas Mountains in half, with one side acting as a shield to protect the land from the elements from the Atlantic Ocean.
You will notice the Berber life throughout the valleys and mountains, offering optimal opportunities to learn of the daily Berber life. an 18 mile off-road excursion will take you through stunning terrain to the Kasbah of Telouet, once the headquarters of the Glaoui Clan. If you have read “Lords of the Atlas,” by Maxwell, this kasbah will have an extra special meaning for you! We will arrive in Ouarzazate in the evening, where we will spend the night.
Day 3: Skoura- Kelaa Mgouna- Dades Gorges
We will depart for Skoura, passing through the “Valley of One Thousand Kasbahs.” We will stop and visit the Amridel Kasbah, followed by a drive along the Dades River. You will be in awe as you take in the dramatic mountain landscape.
Day 4: Erfoud- Merzouga
The journey continues on as we follow the ancient Bedouin trading routes. We will pass a series of fortified villages which display the pre-Saharian architecture. You will fall in love with Erfoud, known for its black fossil marble, initially built by the French as a central administration town. After visiting the town, we will make our way to the Merzouga dunes in time for sunset, where you will find a rejuvenating peacefulness.
Day 5: Merzouga
Discover the life of the Nomads as we go on an excursion to Erg Chebbi. We will visit the Nomad families, be introduced to an African folkloric music and dance performance in Khamlia Village, and walk through Merzouga’s Oasis. Experience the Berber life as you enjoy the tranquility of the desert, get introduced to Berber cuisine and spend the night in a bivouac, under the beautiful stars.
