Day 1 – Marrakech to Roses Valley
On your first day we will depart from your accommodations in Marrakech at 8 am and travel to the Roses Valley. On the way you will be crossing over the High Atlas Mountains and Tizi N’Ticha pass, the highest pass in Morocco at 2260m. Watch as the landscape changes and unfolds with every turn. Each part of the road will review new sites, sometimes a shepherd minding his folk by the side of the road. Maybe a field, seemingly in the middle of “nowhere” where local Berber boys are playing a game of football. Pass a group biking in the mountains and wonder at their strength and endurance. Pass by nomads structures on the side of the road. You will pass through the city of Ouarzazate, the movie capital of Morocco and home to the new solar farm recently opened in 2016.
We will spend the night at a hotel tucked into the side of a mountain slope in the Valley of Roses and awaken to a stunning view. Here traditional Berber life is thriving.
Day 2 – Roses Valley Berber Experience
Today starts with two options. You can enjoy a demonstration of Moroccan bread baking in a traditional kitchen and after breakfast of freshly baked bread and local olive oil, you will head out to the fields with the ladies to select the locally grown vegetables and perhaps a few roses if they are in season. Upon returning from the fields and your introduction to life in a Berber family, you will help the women to prepare and cook a traditional tagine lunch with mint tea.
If you choose, you could also spend the morning with a local guide on a 4 hour hike in the area where you explore the fields, the river valley and enjoy the local wildlife. After tea with a Berber family you will encounter the valleys oldest kasbah for your exploration.
You may also choose to enjoy the hike in the afternoon, or to explore the local village on your own at a relaxing pace, and return to the hotel for tea when you are finished.
Dinner will be at the hotel. All the food you will see today is organic, locally grown, freshly picked and prepared using traditional methods.
Day 3 – Roses Valley to the Sahara Desert
You will have an 8:30 departure following breakfast, and drive along the Valley of 1000 Kasbahs, to the impressive Todra Gorge. (The highest gorge in Morocco at 300 m). You will have an opportunity to explore the gorge on your own as you follow the river that forged the gorge and marvel at its height and shape.
You will then continue driving through the arid plateau crossing another oasis and then to Erfoud, the fossil town where millions of fossils have been discovered and are mined and refined for use and sale. This is also the date capital of Morocco where you can find many varieties of this wonderful fruit. Join us in October for the date festival and enjoy the markets filled to capacity with locals and their wares as they celebrate their bounty.
After Erfoud you will arrive at Erg Chebbi where the beautiful golden Sahara awaits. You will have tea and join your camels for a 1h30 ride through the desert in a caravan to get to your camp.
Relaxing in camp for the evening, your food will be prepared for you by nomads who work there. Preparing a traditional meal is their specialty and sure to be one of the highlights of your journey.
Day 4 – Sahara Desert to Nekob Oasis
Wake up to see the sunrise if you wish, and then you will take your camel back the hotel where you can shower and enjoy breakfast. When you are ready we will drive to Nekob Oasis along the black volcanic rocky mountains, stopping in the village of Alnife Village for a rest stop.
You’ll continue on the way to Nekob Oasis where you can enjoy the beautiful and lush oasis and the Berber village for another encounter with a Berber family for tea.
You will spend the night in the kasbah in the Nekob Oasis.
Day 5 – Nekob Oasis to Marrakech
In the morning we will venture out after breakfast on our way back to Marrakech. We will drive along the Draa Valley filled with date palms and traditional Berber settlements and on to Ourzazate, the movie capital of Morocco. We will stop in Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah to explore the ancient village where 5 families still actively live. Follow the winding alleys to discover this ancient stronghold and reach the peak for an uninterrupted view of the valley that extends as far as the eye can see.
We will make our way back to Marrakech in time to drop you at your accommodation in the Red City and bid you farewell.
