The park is inhabited by a population of about 340 individuals of Mountain Gorillas, which makes up almost half of all the mountain gorillas remaining in the world. Selected gorillas families have been habituated to human presence and the number of visitors is tightly controlled to prevent degradation of the habitat and risks to the gorillas. You will trek one the gorilla families in Bwindi.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is also a birding paradise, home to over 348 bird species. This area is one of Uganda’s best bird-watching destinations. Proclaimed as a World Heritage Site, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world hosting unique and precious floral species. There’s also a substantial chimpanzee population and research shows that Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is the only forest in Africa where Gorillas and Chimpanzees live together.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU GET TO BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST NATIONAL PARK
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is an active expedition with moderate to strenuous hikes. Participants must be at least 15 years old and should be physically fit. While trekking Gorillas, guests will trek through thick jungle at elevations ranging up to 10,000 feet, for as many as four to eight hours, depending on the location of the Gorillas. Treks can be arduous; and the terrain can be steep, uneven, wet, and muddy.
WHAT TO PACK FOR GORILLA TREKKING TOUR IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST NATIONAL PARK
- Boots: A good quality pair of hiking boots will serve you well. A cheap pair of sneakers can’t work.
- Gloves: During the trek, you might be grabbing branches. Carry gloves if you can.
- Light rain jacket: Bwindi is a tropical rainforest. Pack a light-weight rain jacket.
- Energy snacks: Energy snacks like nuts, dried fruit, chocolate or power bars are a great idea.
- Long pants and shirts: It’s best not to expose skin during the jungle trek. Long pants, shirts will cover you up.
