Stop! Watch This Then Visit Hamburg, Germany

Hamburg is so much more than the root word of one of North America’s famous meals. In fact, the hamburger wasn’t even invented there – the dish was first offered by a restaurateur in Conneticut and named by visiting sailors from Hamburg. At least that’s one story; the claim is disputed.

What isn’t disputable is the fact that Hamburg is one of the most beautifully modern yet classically European cities in all of Germany? Despite this, though, it doesn’t have the same rep as its German counterparts, like Berlin or Munich. It’s the second biggest city in the country next to Berlin, and yet, it’s not nearly as touristy as the others. Even if you’re sightseeing in Berlin, you can easily take a trip over to Hamburg. Did you know there’s a lake in the middle of the city? The entire place feels like stepping inside a 19th-century movie: canals stretch along the Elbe River, and some might go so far to say that Hamburg is the “Venice of northern Europe.”

But there’s no need to compare. The city has its own quirks and perks, and one of the best ways to see the area is by hiring a local German guide to take you around. This fun video put together by the Germany tourism board will convince you to travel to Hamburg, and that the area is worth discovering. Whether you want to experience the hustle and bustle of a modern metropolis, and spend some time shopping, or slow down and take in the rich merchant history of the area, go for it. We’ll take full credit for your findings.
