Fishing guide and owner and operator of CC Charters, Cliff Moors, has more than 25 years of saltwater fishing experience, and likes nothing better than to see the look on clients’ faces when they hook a catch. Fishing around Comox Valley, the Campbell River and more in British Columbia, Cliff is also a Red Seal Chef, and so can send clients home with a recipe to try out on the one that didn’t get away.
How did you get into your area of expertise? What’s the biggest haul that you’ve had in one tour?

I started guiding because as an avid sports fisherman, I always enjoyed taking friends and family out fishing and watching the reaction of joy when they caught a nice Pacific salmon.

I’ve caught over 250 lbs of salmon in one morning, that was most likely my best day on the water.

How did you make the transition to becoming a guide for fishing expeditions?

I purchased a larger boat for the purpose of eventually getting started with Ocean Salmon Fishing Charters.

How long have you been guiding?

I’ve been sport fishing salmon on Vancouver Island for over 30 years. This is my sixth season guiding.

What’s your favourite tour or activity?

My favourite tour would be, of course, fishing out of my home port in Comox Valley and showing guests what a beautiful place we live in!

Where else in the world have you been fishing?  And if you couldn’t be in Comox Valley – what would be the next best place and why?  

I’ve fished all over the world and I’d say anywhere on Vancouver Island would be my favourite because I love the fight salmon give you on lighter tackle! It’s more sporty then cranking in a tuna in big tackle.

Do you have any certifications or awards? Can you explain what a ‘Red Seal Chef’ certification is?

The certificates I hold are my marine first aid, radio operator proficiency, small vessel operator proficiency, Marine Emergency Duties and basic fire fighting. Red Seal Chef verification is when you complete five years of cooking [training], pass a government exam and get a high mark to qualify as a certified chef anywhere in Canada.

Do you have a certain style of guiding? Do your clients need to have any previous fishing experience?

I ocean fish only with downriggers trolling or jigging. These are the most effective methods for catching salmon, halibut and ling cod.

No, my clients don’t need any experience fishing before we go out – I will guide you through the whole process.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me is fishing for six to 12 hours, and then cleaning the boat and prepping gear for the next outing afterwards, for another three hours on average.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is seeing people smile!

What’s the most bizarre experience you’ve had on a guided tour?

While motoring out to the fishing grounds, we had a large bull killer whale surface right in front of me and [we] almost hit it.

Can you tell our readers what the benefits are of hiring a guide?

The most beneficial part of hiring a guide is [that] you will guarantee you will be safe and also most likely catch more fish!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

As I sit here at Denham Bay Cottages, I can’t think of anywhere in the world I’d rather be.
