Get to Know Bike Guides Jasper and Thijs

Jasper and Thijs, co-owners of We Bike Amsterdam, believe in small groups and taking a personal approach — and that the best sightseeing is always with the locals. Their goal as bike tour guides is to help travellers leave the “bubble” of the tourism industry and see the real Amsterdam (or escape the bustle of the city to take in the countryside with its villages, brooks and windmills) all from the seat of a bicycle.
How did you get into your field of expertise?

Thijs worked a few years for a bike tour company in Paris. There he got the idea for a bike tour through Amsterdam. I’ve travelled a lot and always liked it best when I could get off the beaten path a bit — that peek beyond the tourist bubble. We decided we wanted to give our customers the feeling that they were not customers, but locals cruising the city with friends.

How did you make the transition to becoming bike guides?

We just started doing it and benefitted from Thijs’ experience as a guide in Paris. Because we are both Dutch — so, born and raised on a bike — the cycling was no problem. We sharpened our stories over time. The love we have for Amsterdam has made it a nice ride so far.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Get up. Brush teeth. Bike around. Eat. Drink a beer with friends. Brush teeth. Sleep.

What’s the best part of your job?

When so many people from so many countries are coming to do a tour with us it almost feels like we are on vacation ourselves.

What’s the most bizarre experience you’ve had on a guided tour?

Thijs met somebody on the Amsterdam tour who was also on his tour three years earlier in Paris. They hugged each other like old friends.

Ever had any odd requests from clients?

Everybody wants to know the typical Amsterdam local stuff. The request: “Where do I find the best swingers’ club in Amsterdam?” was the only one that I had to look up on the Internet.

Every job has its ups and downs. Are there any aspects of the job you aren’t keen on?

We like to keep things relaxed and simple. So, yeah, you could say that we don’t like rushing.

As an experienced guide yourself, can you explain the benefits of hiring a guide?

Hiring a guide is like taking a fun, flexible, interactive, local and dedicated guidebook. But hey, a book can’t speak and a guide can!

Tell us something about Amsterdam that only a guide would know.

The most current information about the city. A good guide lives in the area he speaks of. He loves the place so he will know the best stories and spots.

Do you have any tips for people who are interested in booking a guide, but aren’t too sure what to look for?

Book us. We will show you!

Hi, I’m Thijs and I’m born and raised in Amsterdam. During my own traveling I found out that my best sightseeing was always with locals. This is why I love to give bike tours and why I founded We Bike Amsterdam. Hop on and let me show you.

A few weeks ago I biked with these guys through Amsterdam. I saw loads of stuff that I would never have found myself. They are focussing on the more hidden parts of the city. I liked the approach and I had an excellent coffee :). Would definitely recommend the tour!
