Guide Bio

I have lived in Japan since 1999 and I moved to the World Heritage island of Yakushima in 2011. I began guiding on Yakushima in 2013. I have experience of high altitude treks (over 5,000 metres) as well as expedition hikes in Europe and Asia. Yakushima has a number of great hikes through a wide variety of landscapes; from sub-tropical to sub-alpine. The island is a natural paradise, but it also has a historical and cultural story that sets it apart from mainland Japan. Tours focus upon the ecology of Yakushima with emphasis on the flora and fauna. Tours also convey detailed historical information that fits Yakushima into the general historical picture of Japan. Finally, there is also a good emphasis on experiencing a fun and relaxing tour on a beautiful Japanese island.

“As seen on TripAdvisor : As we only had one day in Yakushima, we requested a hiking tour that would maximise our time and interests. We were able to specify exactly what kind of thing we were looking for, and by the sounds of it if we had wanted to see the turtles, go to the beaches, learn about the culture, history, not just the forests, that would have all been possible and good too. However, we went for the guided forest hike, and were picked up by Steve at 6am, ready with bento breakfast and lunch for our trek. He had chosen a fantastic route, away from the crowds, but taking in some absolutely spectacular sights, and we learned SO much about what we were seeing, and the general history of Yakushima alongside. Usually we just storm up and down mountains without thinking about where we are, but we were so glad that we had Steve’s guiding and enthusiasm about where we were, and we both came away in awe of Yakushima and these extraordinary forests. On top of that, he arranged our accommodation for us (no easy feat requesting 2 weeks before Obon) and took us to the airport at the end of the hike. A great way to enjoy the best the island has to offer, and in great company. Thank you! Visited August 2014

“As seen on TripAdvisor : During our last trip to Japan, Steve has been a great guide, going well beyond our expectations. We met him through a local website, which helped us make the necessary bookings in a country where very few people speak any other language than japanese. Steve made us several suggestions to visit the forests of Yakushima island. His recommendation happened to be a very good choice. So, his ability started even before the tour started, by giving his own opinion on which would be the best choice. During the tour, which proved to be more difficult than normal due to heavy rain during the first 2 hours, he always took care of our safety, telling us where to put our feet and helping in more difficult situation. He always was attentive to our condition, asking us if we were cold or tired. He provide us with shelter (canopy) for the lunch under the rain. During the tour, he gave us an alternative for the itinerary, in order to make sure that the length and difficulty would suit our condition and interest. Steve is extremely knowledgeable about the forest we visited. He knows all details and secrets (even a 3500 year old tree that is known to very few people and which does not show on any map!). He knows the plants and animals. Beyond the knowledge about the forest, he knows Japanese culture, behaviour and history. We learned very interesting things from him about Japan and the Japanese. He is precise in what he does and is a very pleasant person. He is passionate about his job and the island he lives on. He made us discover this forest on this remote island in the best possible way. To summarize, I think that it would be difficult to find a better guide. I am 57 and had many guides in my life. I seldom make such positive comments. Every word I wrote is true. I could not find anything negative to write. Visited August 2014
