Get To Know Nepal Guide Phil
From my childhood I used to interact with different people whenever I met them. Which really felt great and that is one and only keen interest that made me want to become a tour guide. This is my dream job.
What’s the most bizarre experience you’ve had on a guided tour?
Actually some travelers are too good. Once I dropped my cell phone on the swimming pool and the cell was not working while I was guiding an Arabian client. He actually bought me a new one even though it was not his fault at all.
I just go through my head analyzing the travelers requirements, their age and what they might prefer more as per my suggestions and technically that has worked well to date.
What is the best part of your job?
Definitely, it’s reward at first. Moreover, I love to interact with different people from different parts of the world and the fun part is to see a humble smile on the face of the travelers before final departure. It feels absolutely great to take one step forward and face new people from different part of the world.
The best part of using a guide is that they could more possibly connect with the specific destination and the clients in the best way – saving the time and best value for your money.
Tell us something about your area that only a guide would know.
There are plenty of natural and cultural wonders left to be discovered and I believe that we can easily connect those places with rest of the world. Like natural beauty, local culture, hidden heritage, festival, rituals, cuisine, arts and architecture.
The shadow part of this job is not being busy for most of the time. As being a seasonal industry we have to be free without work for the whole slack season, getting ourselves involved with some other official works to carry on our life.
And finally, in your view, what makes a good tour guide?
A tour guide should have effective commentary and communication skills. Likewise, they must have adequate information regarding 4A’s (Attractions of destination, Accessibility, Accommodation and Amenities facilities). Finally, a positive attitude and professional behavior are the key of success to become a perfect tour guide.
Some say traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.
Well, I love to explore new places, travelling is my passion it helps me to understand the reality of living. I want to experience as much as I can of this world, first hand. As a professional tour leader, I have adequate qualifications, knowledge and capabilities of interpreting and conveying the natural and cultural heritage sites of my country, Nepal. Moreover, I have the ability to keep the tourist in a comfortable zone, make them happy, entertained and satisfied.
