Guide Bio

I have lived in the Mission District in San Francisco since 1981. I love where I live and truly enjoy showing this magical city to visitors. Combining my love of San Francisco with 20 years of experience in the restaurant business led me to create food tours showcasing our SF’s incredible food scene, specializing in taking you to places you would not find on your own.

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! Being someone who knows a lot about san francisco history myself, i was very impressed with Michael, our guide’s knowledge and passion for the city! My sister came to town, so i decided to “play tourist” in my own town. It was fun and informative, and Micheal was also very entertaining! I’m putting it on my list of things to do with out-of-town guests.

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! Mission Food Tour: We fully enjoyed our walking tour. We expected “tastes” of the Mission – we got a “meal” in the Mission, along with a tidbits on the Mission District culture and history. We were stuffed by the end! The guides were friendly, professional, and a pleasure to spend the afternoon with. The eateries were varied ranging from walk-up street style Chilean empanadas, to very casual Mayan tostadas, to “quick food” Indian Samosas, to fusion food including goat cheese fondue and deep fried brussel sprouts. We were told the restaurants will always change so you could do this tour more than once. In addition to restaurant visits we all picked up little treats at a local market, and enjoyed a photo stop at the Clarion Alley murals. The guides were great about accommodating food differences (one vegatarian and one vegan joined the tour). We didn’t wait anywhere for our food because one guide advanced the group while the other escorted us from place to place. We are locals, but we brought a friend from out of town, and we all enjoyed things we hadn’t seen before. Bring your appetite, and dress in layers, it is San Francisco, and it can be cold in the shade.

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! My husband and I really enjoyed the Mission Food tour. The tour guides (there were 2 with our group) were knowledgeable and passionate and knew the owners of the places where we stopped to try some food. The fact that the owners of the restaurants would come out and spend some time talking to you about the cuisine, the history of the restaurant and the neighborhood was an additional color to the picturesque and amazing food that we have been trying during this 3.5 hour tour. We also got to hear some history of how the area developed, which was interesting and gave an additional appreciation for the neighborhood. This a wonderful tour. I would recommend it to anyone!

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! 8/15/2014 I took the North Mission tour recently and it was a blast. This was nice diverse taste of restaurants and purveyors in the area to include Mexican, Spanish tapas, mixed bbq flavors, a butchery offering hotdogs with bacon, a chocolate store and a local ice cream shop. The walk was easy and on flat surfaces and a fun tour learning from the guides and mixing with visitors from all over. I would recommend doing this tour and the Mission district is a vibrant location for a tasty food excursion.

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! I’m new to San Francisco and so I decided to do the Mission Food Tour (North). It was a bit of a rainy day, but that didn’t stop us from having a great time. Michael, our guide, is a great people person and he has the ability to sense what the group is feeling (food wise), giving us a semi-customized tour based on the group’s preferences. Michael’s knowledge of the neighborhood was impressive, making the tour very informative and entertaining. My favorite stops were Southpaw and Dandelion Chocolate. Would go again!

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! I have lived in San Francisco for almost 20 years, but I still love playing tourist in my own city! Whether you are a local, or just visiting our fine city, Explore San Francisco is the way to go! I have done the Mission tour, and recently did the North Beach and Chinatown tour, which was very interesting. Our guide, Michael, was very knowledgeable about the rich history of San Francisco. He also engages with you in a way to make you feel comfortable, like he’s having fun and enjoying every minute along with you. I got a deal on Gold Star and I think they are still available, so check it out! I also hear they do a tour of the Armory (SF’s home for the fetish company Kink.com). I can’t wait to do that one next!

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! Just did Mission Food Tour yesterday. Our guide Michael has lived in the neighborhood since it was all body shops and drag queens…he knew every nook and cranny. He was fun, personable and handled our group quite deftly. We had people from New York, Italy, East Bay, Seattle and even some people from the city in our group. I live in Santa Cruz and just wanted to get to know an area of the city I never go to. The food was all spectacular, we had plenty to eat, saw some amazing murals in one alley, hear great stories about the history of certain buildings, and really really enjoyed ourselves. I highly recommend for a great way to spend an afternoon and get to know San Fran in a different light!

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! My husband & I had 2 outstanding tours and tour guides. We did the Mission Tour with Michael. We are new to the Bay area & had not been to the Mission. Michael gave us a great intro. to the history and architecture. In addition we enjoyed some great chocolate & saw Mark Zuckerberg’s new house! The second tour was a combined evening tour of China Town and North Beach with Dan Chew. We had been to both before but we saw a whole new side to both areas. We couldn’t believe how much we learned about the hidden history of both areas. In addition we had delicious food and desserts. I can’t imagine what either Michael or Dan could do to improve the experience. It was awesome.

As Seen On Yelp: 5 Stars! Our children gave us the tour as a Christmas gift for our upcoming trip to SF for the birth of our granddaughter. We had the best time. Michael the owner and Isabelle our tour guide provided a delightful afternoon. The stops we made were well thought out and planned well and very informative. The food we sampled was interesting and tasty, gave us a real feel of the Mission District. The adult beverage samplings were an extra treat. Michael topped off the tour by sending us home with the best desserts ever, provided by Pie Fridays, not to be missed!

As Seen On Yelp! 5 Stars! We took the Mission North tour with Michael and can’t recommend it highly enough. Michael was knowledgeable, personable and great to hang around with. He had a repoire with the restaraunts we visited and it was great to be treated like a local. The tastings were diverse – spanish, chilean, american southern, indian, artisan chocolate and ice cream. And the tastings were not just tastings – we had a ton of food and were so full by the tours end. We got a bit of history of the Mission district as well. A great investment and a great time.

As Seen On Yelp- 5 Stars My friend and I did the Mission North food tour after finding a deal on Gilt City. We had such a great time- even though we’re both familiar with the Mission, the only place we went to that we’d been to before was Bi-Rite Creamery. We were lucky enough to have Michael as our guide, who I believe is the owner. Not only did we get a great sampling of Mission food, but we also got a little SF history as well. We hit up a nice variety of spots- butcher shop, tapas, empanadas, Indian fusion, pizza, chocolate, and Bi-Rite for ice cream. He was also nice enough to buy us prickly pears (aka tuna) to try from the local bodega, which apparently are only in season for a couple months out of the year. We had a generous portion of food, and got to sit down at most of the restaurants. With that said, the portions were mindful not to get us too stuffed by the last stops, so it was perfect. He also took us through Clarion Alley, filled with a ton of murals. He said he has relationships with 30 places in the area, so the stops change depending on the day. He’s lived in the area for many years, so he knows it well. If I have to picky, I’d say the only criticism I have is that when we went to Bi-Rite, for practicality sake because of the perpetual long line, he got us ice cream sandwiches. I feel like we missed out on the scoop ice cream they’re known for. In my case, I’d been there before so it was fine, but I feel like for those who weren’t familiar with Bi-Rite, they weren’t getting an accurate taste of it. Overall, I had a great experience and my friend and I agreed we would totally be open to another food tour they offer. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, I highly recommend it!
