Guide Bio

I am an adventure tour guide specializing in tours of the Omo Valley and the Great Rift Valley regions of Ethiopia. I offer customized tours for all budgets throughout the valleys of southern Ethiopia. My tours range from budget camping to luxury accommodations and are targeted to individual travellers, couples, families, photographers and others interested in coming to the region for specific needs or projects.

As a local of the area, I speak many of the indigenous languages. I grew up in the Omo Valley and have many relationships with people in the tribal villages as well as the local towns. These special relationships allow me to provide a special and authentic experience for my customers.

Come enjoy the wonders of Ethiopia!

Omo-Turkana Tours

I specialize in completely customized tours of all budgets in Omo Valley and the greater East and Great Rift Valley regions of Southern Ethiopia. Tours range from budget camping to luxury accommodations and are catered for individual travellers, couples, families, photographers and others interested in coming to the region for specific needs or projects. Hello! I’m Melak, Travelling with me will provide a unique style of travel and something very different from your typical holiday tour package. For 10 years, I have been hosting travelers from around the globe for everything from a 5-star experience to a gritty adventure. Having formally studied tourism at University, and now teaching tourism to students like I was, our tours are safe, comfortable and deeply authentic. Whether it’s dancing through the streets with an all Ethiopian village at Christmas, listening to the birdsong of sunrise, or being unexpectedly welcomed into a school on our path for hugs, our Ethiopian friends will welcome you in and leave you with memories that last a lifetime. Ethiopia is overflowing with Unesco World Heritage Sites, and I will make sure that you see the most important while also tasting the flavors of our country and meeting the wonderful people that make this country so inviting. We cover highlights from the bustling city tour of Addis Ababa or ”new flower,” to the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, our well-preserved, still-functioning churches carved entirely out of rock. Or take a trip into nature by visiting the Simien mountains, with its deep canyons and bizarrely jagged mountains sculpting an unbelievable scenery. Or go hot and dry at the Denakil Depression Dalol - “the Gate of hell,” an actively volcanic depression featuring a permanent lava lake and vast field of yellow and orange sulphuric rocks. Or visit my home tribe in the Omo Valley, and sleep under the stars, hear the chants, and share some homemade beer. With incredible pre-historic sites (we are the home to famous Lucy), and don’t forget our coffee, your guide is such an important part of that experience. You will be paired with an enthusiastic, and caring professionally trained guide with wide field experience, knowledge and guiding skills. Their knowledge ranges from prehistory, ethnography, conservation, natural flora and fauna of Ethiopia and the East African region. This vast knowledge is part of our guarantee for a successful and enjoyable excursion during your valuable time in Ethiopia. Depending on the destinations you choose, I can guarantee you some of the best prices on beautiful game lodges and luxury camps with whom I have long-term relationships. And while not for everyone, I highly recommend camping with Tribes of the Omo Valley to experience a completely different way of life. A little about me: Born and raised in Jinka, a small Ethiopian city in the Southern part of Ethiopia - the lower Omo River Valley. I love to share this remarkable cultural crossroads, with its colorful assortment of tribes nearby - like the Mursi, noted for their large lip plates. More tradition runs deep here, walking through the weekly tribal markets and remote villages or attending one of the many ceremonies really can feel like stepping back in time. Why choose us?: Our priority is understanding your interests, time and pace. Our guides are motivated by this and knowledgeable about the destination; our goal is to create a special connection to our home, Ethiopia, and to be sure that you leave with a long list of memories and a great experience. These tours truly are life-changing, perspective-changing, and touch many people in an unforgettable way. And, very importantly, guiding our guests is not just a routine, but we live by standards for conservation - not only for the cultural customs and way of life but for the environment too...to make this a better destination for years to come. Welcome to Ethiopia - the land of great diversity, a Magical place.....we look forward to welcoming you in person and showing you our home. Amesgenalew
