Guide at a Glance
Mani started work on his parents’ farm as soon as he could walk, fitting in school around daily buffalo-herding duties. His first ‘real job’ was selling vegetables from a bicycle in order to raise enough cash to put himself through college. Then, following a mixed career as a farmer, vegetable-seller and factory-worker, Mani’s lucky break came when a family friend suggested he try out for a local rafting company. He hasn’t looked back since. Mani has been working worldwide as a rafting adventure guide since 1996. In 2006 he became the first Nepali to qualify as a River Instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in the US. He now spends his summers teaching river and hiking courses with NOLS in the US and India, but always makes it back to Nepal in time for the first expeditions of the fall season.
