Guide Bio

Since 1999, I have been a tour guide specializing in nature and the environment. I became a guide because my godfather, who was a driver to a tour operator, took me on a tour and his boss asked me if I wanted to become a tourist guide. Since then, this is what I have wanted to achieve.

With over 15 years of diversified service experience in the tourism industry, I have experience in leading tourist group for known companies in North America and Europe. I am licensed in tourism management with a solid general knowledge. I have four years of experience in the hotel environment in Customer Service Attention and Marketing, Entrepreneur and have supervisor functions experience. I have excellent interpersonal and analytical skills and speak fluent Spanish and English.

I also have worked as a Location Scout for two well-known filming productions, Discovery Animal Planet and Survivor Nicaragua CBS. I won a Top Guide Award 2010 REI Adventure Travel and the 200 best companies to work for in United State of North America.

I love adventure and nature especially birds but also politics, boxing sport, religion, culture and most important, Nicaraguan gastronomy. In my time off, I love to spend time with my two lovely daughters and my wife.

Gerald is an excellent tour guide! I had the pleasure of being chaperoned with five other people in the summer of 2011 by Gerald. He always tried to make sure we got our moneys worth, and was open to schedule adjustments. He was very knowledgeable in all aspects dealing with Nicaragua. I enjoyed getting to know Gerald on a personal level, and when I visited Nicaragua in the summer of 2013 for a church mission trip I made sure to contact him to let him know I would be in Managua just so I could say hi to him.

My trip for nica for the first time was great i stayed there for 2 weeks and i hired Gerald services for my tour guide when i met him he was very polite and very informed about Nicaragua and he asked were we wanted to head out every location that he took us he was very detailed on the history of each place and took us to some fascinated location i would never find.He also ask us what kind of recreation activities we wanted to do either the night life or just enjoying adventures such as fishing hiking snorkeling site seeing or taking trips to islands, after time when i got more comfortable with him i ask more fluent question i noticed that he would talk about mother nature and how he enjoys having that every day and appreciate what we really have and how you get away and get a piece of mind. I enjoyed Nicaragua nature from the volcanoes to the to rivers connecting with the oceans and of course the sunsets. I feel hiring Gerald was a good decision for me because he was well educated in america and spoke English and Spanish fluent so the communication was very well for me to understand and, ask question without him thinking about what I have asked so that was great =). Nicaragua was great for me and i would go again and have a great time

I first met Gerald Duran in June of 2012 on a week long service and immersion high school sponsored trip to Nicaragua. I was one of the adult chaperones for a group of 20 students. Gerald took exceptional care of all of us! His English was/is superior! As a language teacher I can vouch for that. Gerald has a unique way of connecting with his clients. You feel like you are receiving all of his attention and care. He selects his destinations very carefully and makes “Boy Scout like” preparations weeks in advance of your arrival. He is very detail oriented, attentive, patient, knowledgeable and friendly. As a high school teacher who has traveled to Spain, France, Peru and Nicaragua with students many times, I cannot think of a anyone better to show you the exciting places, foods and adventures that await you in Nicaragua! Gerald Duran is my first pick for an insider’s guide to Nicaragua!

Without exception, whether planning and executing service immersion experiences for high school student groups or creating exciting and exotic travel opportunities for individuals, Gerald Duran fulfills and exceeds all expectations. His knowledge of history, culture, religion, geography, culinary delights and his commitment to safety promises to provide experiences of a lifetime. For several years, my students and I have benefited from Gerald’s leadership. His ability to communicate effectively in Spanish and English to a diversity of individuals makes Gerald an exceptional choice for travel to Nicaragua. Thank you, Gerald, for your continued commitment to assist our students and me with our group and individual travel experiences to your beautiful country.

We had the luck to be paired with Gerald on a 20 day trip in 2009. I would happily second the sentiments expressed in the preceding review. I think it is testament to Gerald that, now in 2016, we are still in touch and I am happily writing a review of our experience with him. We have also referred others of my friends to Gerald and they have travelled with him in Nicaragua in 2015.

There is no doubt that Gerald was professional at all times and he did everything to accommodate our needs as far as possible. We felt safe at all times and were always made welcome. One of the things we enjoyed about our trip was that everywhere we went people seemed to know Gerald. I don’t mean simply owners of restaurants, hotels or lodges, or those in the tourist industry, but people greeted him as their friend… everywhere. Everyone, including us, seemed to enjoy Gerald’s company and he was simply, all the time, a lot of fun – full of energy and always with a smile on his face.

Another thing that we really appreciated was that Gerald had such a breadth of knowledge not simply of nature and conservation (I will admit we are a bit mad on birds), but also the history, politics, economics and culture of Nicaragua. We had so many fascination conversations and it was great to hear Gerald expressing his views in such an engaging and eloquent way. He is a man with a history of his own which reflects the challenges of Nicaragua’s past and yet he remains healthily patriotic about the beauty and diversity of 21st century Nicaragua.

Go to Nicaragua. And go with Gerald.

We had the pleasure of meeting Gerald on our trip to Nicaragua in 2014. We had made arrangements through a tour company and were assigned a tour guide. The particular guide that was to be with us could not do our tour, so he asked his colleague Gerald to accompany us, and I truly believe we were Blessed!
Gerald is an exceptional person! He was extremely attentive to our every need and wish, and showed us Nicaragua in a way I never expected. I feel he went above and beyond his duties as a tour guide. His knowledge of the country was phenomenal! He explained the political problems of the past in Nicaragua, in a way that I was totally able to comprehend, as he guided us and showed us all of the historical sites and places of interest. His ability to explain all the years of history was outstanding.
As we toured the country, he was continually giving us information relevant to what we were doing and seeing. When we toured nature attractions, I found his knowledge about botanicals to be amazing, as he is an outstanding eco tour guide. For any question that we posed to Gerald, he was able to give us exceptional information.
Gerald is a remarkably personable man, that posses wonderful qualities. He is an extremely energetic, passionate and enthusiastic professional. He posses excellent communications skills, time management, and an outstanding sense of humour! I have already recommended him to one of my friends that will be visiting Nicaragua in the near future as a tour guide.
