Guide Bio

Get To Know Italy Guide Francesco Camperlingo

He not only masterfully navigates the boat, but he can also fix them and even build them from scratch! Italy Guide Francesco Camperlingo is clearly a man of many talents. and his passion for showing off the Amalfi coast of Italy is crystal clear – just like the water.
Did you have any jobs or a career before becoming a tour guide?  How did you make the transition to becoming a tour guide?

I was a boat mechanic before entering into charters. I began my nautical career not only fixing, but constructing boats. I was constantly on the water with boats and this really paved the way for my career in charters and guiding because I am passionate about it. The Amalfi Coast is such a beautiful region in the world, it came naturally to show people the views by sea.

What’s the best lesser known “off the beaten path” highlight of your region that you enjoy taking visitors to?

One of my favorite places to go is Conca dei Marini. It has a little beach 300 steps down from the road, with tiny family run restaurants serving local cuisine and fresh seafood caught that morning. Everyone knows each other, the children splash and play in the turquoise bay, and it is really a picture perfect scene of the Amalfi Coast. This was actually a favorite destination for Sophia Loren as well as Jacqueline Kennedy. It is authentic and relaxed.

How would you describe your style as a guide?

My style is warm, respectful, and sincere. It is also very laid back… not formal or “corporate”. Boat excursions are supposed to be a balanced mix of not only information, but relaxation, swimming, and simply enjoying the breathtaking surroundings.

How many people are typically in the crew of your boat?

Just me. The speedboats are small and one captain is sufficient.

What is the best part of your job?

Meeting interesting people and showing them another part of the world, as well as providing a beautifully memorable experience on the Amalfi coastline.

What’s the most bizarre experience or odd request from a client you’ve had on a guided tour?

I honestly do not have bizarre requests but a fun request that I often have is proposals onboard which I love to make very special. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most romantic places in the world.

Every job has its ups and downs. Are there any aspects of your job that you don’t like or aren’t that keen on?

I don’t like when people walk into the cabin wet, or when they flush paper products down the toilet! These are two things NOT to do on a boat!

When you’re not busy guiding tours – what’s your favourite thing to do?

I enjoy traveling very much.  I’ve been throughout Europe, and to North, Central and South America.  Asia is next on my list.  I also like to cook and my “signature” dishes are Pasta Siciliana (pasta with eggplant) and Totani con Patate (squid with potatoes).

As an experienced guide yourself, can you explain to our readers what the benefits of hiring a guide are?

It opens a whole new world and allows you to really see the area through the eyes of a local.

You must have a lot of experience with great food and drinks from the Amalfi Coast and Capri area – What is the best local specialty that all visitors must try?

Scialatielli (a long pasta) with frutta di mare (seafood).

In your view, what makes a good tour guide?

Passion for your job, your land, and your culture.

And finally, have you got any tips for people who are interested in booking a guide like yourself, but aren’t too sure what to look for?

Travel with an open mind and you will not be disappointed! A guide is the best asset that you can have when traveling like a local, but at your own pace and in your own style.

Francesco knows all there is to know about the Amalfi Coast and Capri. He has been working with boats for years and is considered one of the top captains in the area. Don’t miss the most important sites of the area, the grottos, best swimming coves, wildlife, breathtaking scenery of the villages creeping up the mountainsides, relaxation on a cushioned sundeck, local beach side restaurants, and more! He will show you the best of the best and the off-the-beaten path highlights. This is a great opportunity to see the true beauty and culture of the coastline on a cruise from a private boat with a local captain. Perhaps the best part is that the excursions are customized. Simply tell Francesco what it is that you would like to see, and he will customize the perfect day for you and your family.
