Guide Bio

New Orleans native Dylan O’Donnell is the owner and sole guide for Doctor Gumbo Tours. He loves his city, and he loves to share it with others.

Dylan has traveled the world in search of adventure: he’s eaten his way through Sicily, hiked the Grand Canyon, swilled pints and (attempted to) sing songs in Dublin, and actually paid money in Mexico to get jolted with electricity.

After graduating University in literature and the audio-visual arts, Dylan spent a few years working several unfulfilling jobs. In 2001 he spontaneously moved to Rome to eat prosciutto, drink too much espresso and work as a tour guide of the Eternal City. For the next four years he gave tours of the ancient monuments, the Vatican City, the holy sites and pagan temples. While there he picked up the nickname Doctor Gumbo, on account of his Sunday ritual of cooking the typical New Orleans dish, gumbo, and feeding his friends.

In 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck his beloved hometown and he was compelled to come home. Since then, he’s worked as a graphic designer, web designer and marketing director for an award-winning New Orleans architecture firm. Additionally, he co-founded and organized a Running of the Bulls festival in New Orleans in 2007, with an attendance of 20,000 people in 2013.

In 2011 Dylan returned to the tourism industry as a tour guide, this time in his own city and state. Since then he has given hundreds of tours to thousands of people, proudly showing off his region and showing them a great time in the process.

Dylan founded Doctor Gumbo Tours in 2013, and is driven to give insightful, well-researched and entertaining tours of New Orleans and southern Louisiana. With a former expat’s perspective, he can also provide insight as only a true New Orleans local can.

When he’s not guiding or planning festivals, you’re likely to find him either DJing world music in a local club, gardening in his yard, or at home cooking gumbo for his wife and four kids.

As seen on Yelp: So, Dylan (aka Dr Gumbo) is quite obviously someone that loves sharing his passion for New Orleans. To craft this tour to share with you, he obviously spent a good bit of time and energy to make it informative AND fun. It’s truly a great social event, as it’s not NONSTOP information…just the right amount of History mixed with time for you to mingle with those on the tour and enjoy this fine city! I highly recommend this tour for folks that enjoy cocktails and history, but built AROUND a good time. Dylan is no doubt a true aficionado of Nouvelle Orleans.

As seen on Yelp: There are so many great things to do in this city! But this tour is a must DO! Great way to have some awesome drinks that you never would order on your own! I liked that there were choices of drinks. You visit really neat bars with hidden areas that you would never know existed! The guide was a lot of fun and really new his stuff! The history was so interesting that I wanted to sit and listen to it all night :) It was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it again! This was the highlight of our trip!

As seen on Yelp: My husband and I love New Orleans and visit from the west coast every chance we get. This trip was a celebration of birthdays and anniversaries, bringing our 2 girls and their boyfriends for a spectacular week. One of the true highlights was Dr. Gumbo’s cocktail tour!!! Dr. Gumbo (Dylan) is the consummate tour guide who is obviously in love with his home town and its stories. He provides a splendid mix of area tales and drink info–their evolution, origination, and recipes. Pleasant strolls between the bars allow for time to reflect and ask questions as well as participate in lighthearted discussions and mingle with other tour guests. With a choice of drinks at each establishment everyone was content . It was certainly a first-rate experience and we can’t wait to do it again!!!

As seen on TripAdvisor: It was my first time visiting New Orleans. My boyfriend really wanted me to have a full and fun experience in the city, whatever possible in 2-1/2 days, so he started the trip by joining the Cocktail Tour with Dr. Gumbo. It was the first thing we did…we landed at the airport, dropped off our bags at the hotel and walked over to the meeting place for the tour. I don’t think there was a better way to start the trip than with historic cocktails (grasshopper…my fave, YUM!) and history about New Orleans and the French Quarter! Talk about loosening up a bit and letting your hair down – Dr. Gumbo is a wonderful host and made us feel welcome to the city and a part of the community. Off the beaten path, this tour took us on an exclusive backstreet stroll among gas lights and cobbled streets to patron hidden local gems and cigar bars. A little bit of whisky, a little bit tipsy and a little bit of history are together here in perfect harmony. This event is the perfect way to start or end a trip in NOLA and we had a great time! A cure for the common tour, yes!!! This is more like a gathering of friends listening to stories and sampling delicious craft cocktails. Would I do it again?…Every time I visit. Thanks Dr. G!

As seen on TripAdvisor: My wife and I did a private city tour AND the amazing and informative French Quarter cocktail tour with Dylan. We never realized how much history there could be in a cocktail. We experienced well chosen bars with secret rooms and world class bar keepers that we would never have discovered on our own. Of course, a quick stroll along Burbon street was included as well. Being a native to New Orleans Dylan knows everything the city has to offer. Due to his travels all over the world he could explain the diversity that forms New Orleans great culture even better. From the influence of European history to the modern side of New Orleans, everything was very well balanced throughout the tours including an overall picture of the city and its context in history as well as fun facts to remember.
