Guide Bio

Desirae comes from a long line of islanders and takes great pride sharing the history of Catalina with her guests. Being part of a multi-generational family makes every story personal and makes her tours feel like you are visiting with friends (instead of a tour guide). She loves the heritage she gets to share and cannot wait to have you on tour.

As seen on Zerve: My husband and I took a day trip to Catalina for his birthday and since he’d never been before I thought that this tour sounded like a great way to try yummy food and learn about the island. Our tour guide was born and raised on Catalina and was adorable. I suddenly had 10 million questions about Catalina and she patiently answered every one. We sampled delicious food from local favorite restaurants and Desirae had back stories for every place we went. It was a delightful 3 hours that made my husband and I wish we had booked a room to stay the weekend. I highly recommend!! Visited October 2014.

As seen on Zerve: Desirae was our tour guide, and took us to some of the best restaurants in Avalon to sample their gourmet food, which was fantastic! And it was like having a full lunch after visiting six locations. Raised in Avalon, she also provided us with Avalon’s fascinating history and culture that you won’t find in any history book. Highly recommend it! Visited July 2014.

As seen on Zerve: Three hours FLEW by! All selected restaurants’ food servings were delicious! At one (Steve’s steak house), the owner, Steve, came out to greet us which I thought was a warm and welcoming touch. Desirae was terrific as our fearless leader, entertaining us with stories of restaurant owners, Catalina’s culture and history. My daughter and I had fun spending our gift voucher on delicious pastries at the Coffee Store. Because of this tour, I intend to go back to try my favorite restaurants and shop at some of the unique stores. See you next summer !!! or maybe this winter !!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!! As seen on Zerve: My boyfriend and I were on a cruise that docked in Catalina for the day. Since it was our first trip to Catalina, and the shore excursions through Carnival did not sound appealing, we decided to do some research on “fun things to do in Catalina”. To our luck Taste of Avalon came up multiple times along with the segway tour, so we were a little torn on what to do for our short time on the island. We decided to do the food tour since we both love to eat! Our tour started at noon in front of Steve’s Steakhouse. Desirae was very engaging and constantly kept our attention with the fun facts and history of the island. We never felt rushed to eat fast and get to the next restaurant like on some food tours I’ve been on at other places. It was a great pace with wonderful food and drink. We had time to walk down and take a quick pause to learn more about the casino and Wrigley history. Everything was amazing! At the end of the tour, she asked us what was our favorite food item and it was very hard to pick one! I loved everything!!!!! This tour is wonderful for seasoned travelers to the island as well as newbies. I’m already planning my next trip to the island! For the price of the tour, you get 6 restaurants tastings and a history lesson, great value! I highly recommend this tour! Spread the word! Visited January 2014.

As seen on Zerve: Our Taste of Catalina Food Tour was the highlight of wonderful site- and sun-packed vacation to southern California. Even my junior high-aged daughter calls this adventure the best part of the whole trip. Our guide, Desirae, was knowledgeable about the island’s cultural history and so personable. Our day’s sampling, from crab cakes and craft brew to salted caramel gelato and ginger beer floats, made everyone happy. Restaurant views were spectacular. Service at every stop was warm and professional in a friendly, small-town way. Taste of Catalina tastefully accommodated both my vegan sister-in-law’s diet restrictions and beverage changes necessary for my child. Our entire group of six loved everything about this tour! It left us eager to return to Catalina for more. Visited October 2013.

As seen on Zerve: Desirae, our guide, was absolutely wonderful. On time, nurturing, authentic. She had grown up on the island and her acquaintance with the restaurant owners and locals on the street made me feel like sort of a local myself! Her restaurant choices were special, mostly places owned by descendants of Catalina’s founders, 100-200 years ago, and she had a lot of special little details, like about Rose, from the fish shop on the wharf, who now can be seen about town on her walker saying “I can go faster this way”. I had such a good time, and found the food samples delicious, but most of all, I walked away with a deepened appreciation of island families and culture. Visited September 2013.

As seen on Zerve: Thank you DEZ! We had such a good time having you as our tour guide! The Avalon Tasting and Cultural Walking Tour is a definite must do when visiting Catalina. There is plenty of walking…food…and Catalina history! We are SoCal residents that live in the San Gabriel Valley and this was our first visit to Avalon. We are definitely coming back. Hopefully more restaurants will be part of the tour so at least it won’t be the same places all the time. I wasn’t expecting to be full but I really was! Each restaurant featured some of their signature dishes. We were even served by the some of the owners themselves. This tour is new and has only been around a few months. Visited June 2013.

The samplings were excellent as well. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the island. Visited April 2013.
