At 16, he set to a life at sea, eventually spending six years sailing singlehanded between Maine, the Caribbean and Ireland in a small engineless boat. In 2008, Captain Daniel rebuilt the Bufflehead and began sharing his stories and experiences as well as the history of the region with first time sailors and tourists to the area.
