Ben's Ecological Safaris
Nature, Wildlife Safari
I was born in the shadows of Mt Kenya, one of Kenya’s richest natural habitats. It is a place of streams, rivers, forest, heath, snow-capped peaks and lush vegetation – all teeming with birds, animals and insects. Being an active, inquisitive and energetic child I quickly developed a keen interest in nature. This led me to study Biological Sciences in school where I gained a deeper understanding of the world around me. However at a very young age I realized that I have a passion to share this knowledge and love of my country with others and so I completed a Tour Guiding Course at the Air Travel and Related Studies Centre-Nairobi, one of the best Tourism and Travel school in East Africa.
After qualifying as a tour guide I guided various groups of students around Kenyan and Tanzanian National Parks. I have also worked as the Resident Ornithologist and Naturalist, as well as a Guest Relations Officer in a number of the top East African classic Camps and Lodges. Besides working in various accommodation places, I have also led more than a dozen bird watching, wildlife and photography tours in East Africa and Ethiopia for both local and many International Travel Companies for nearly 20 years now. In addition to this I have conducted a number of research projects in various East Africa’s IBAs (Important Biodiversity Areas), within where I organize and guide my tours.
I am a keen member of various East African Professional Safari Guides and Naturalists Associations, various East African bird clubs like Nature Kenya and also a member of the Kenya Bird Committee as well as Kenya Raptors Working Group, East African Wildlife Society besides many other conservation organizations. Although I have enjoyed my relationship with the various accommodations and companies that I continually worked with, in early 2001 I decided to start my own tour company (Ben’s Ecological Safaris) as director and guide. This allows me to provide tours with a wider remit other than just the “Big Five” or “Birder Specials”. I now provide informative but fun tours which are ideal for students, holiday makers or local people who want to know more about the natural world around them. My wide East Africa’s and Ethiopia’s knowledge and experience, have made me to build a considerable number of fanatic clientele and equally kept travelers returning back to East Africa year after year.
