Get To Know Netherlands Guide Bart Sluiter

Bart not only makes sure that you get to know the Netherlands in a cheerful way,  but also by letting you taste some traditional Dutch treats!
Why did you become a tour guide?

Four years ago, friends of mine from St. Petersburg, Russia came over and stayed with me. I’ve hosted them at my home and took them to Amsterdam, Zaandam and the Zaanse Schans. I enjoyed telling them everything I knew about my country and my region so I wanted to do this more often. Now as a tour guide I am able to tell others about the beautiful area I live in and show them, for example, how saw mills boosted the economy of Amsterdam by supplying the wood to build the ships for the United Dutch East Indian Company with.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Most of the times, I go to Amsterdam to pick guests up to drive them to windmill village Zaanse Schans. At Zaanse Schans, I can tell my guests all about how this region developed into the city it is nowadays, passing beautiful wooden houses, windmills and traditional crafts along the way.

What is the best part of your job?

I still enjoy most taking care of my guests and to surprise them with stories they have never heard before.

Every job has its ups and downs. Are there any aspects of your job that you don’t like or aren’t that keen on?

Sometimes it’s hard when I have a mixed group. I don’t want anyone to feel rushed but I also don’t want the other people in the group to wait for some guests that take more time.

As an experienced guide yourself, can you explain to our readers what the benefits of hiring a guide are?

As I’ve experienced when traveling myself, you will miss out a lot of stories and understanding of a place you visit if you don’t hear the full story from a local guide. Besides that, a good tour guide makes the experience complete with fun anecdotes and makes you feel more than welcome.

In your view, what makes a good tour guide?

A local tour guide who has lived for a long time in a place can tell you so much more about an area.

As seen on Tripadvisor: Yee Man L 2 reviews Reviews in 2 cities “Adding history, story and culture to Zaanse Sachans” Reviewed July 6, 2014 In the tour, you will learn more about the Zaanse Sachs, the industrial use of windmills, and the histories and stories of the many industries. The tour is good and informative. For me, Bart’s tour adds a historical and cultural layer to Zaannse Sachans scenery. Although you may learn some of the histories/ background from some of the museums, Bart’s tour will give you a very succinct overview, almost like an introduction of the industries and the area. Plus, some of the stories were not told in the museums!! I personally enjoy it. :) The reason i gave four star but not five because the beginning part of the tour was, though very informative, a bit boring. But the middle part and the end were great! All in all, I would recommend the tour to anybody visiting the area :) Visited June 2014

As seen on Tripadvisor: “Lovely tour with an excellent guide, Bart” Reviewed May 16, 2014 via mobile Highly recommend anyone to join the guided tour offered by Zaan tours. Our tour guide, Bart an excellent job showing us the beauty of the village. He was very passionate, welcoming and patient during the tour despite our many attempts to take photos which would have slowed the group down. Zaanse Schans a MUST to visit in Netherlands :) Visited May 2014
