Cellar Door Experience
Alex Giesen is one of the owners and operators of Giesen Wines, a family owned company. The Giesens are originally from Germany and planned to settle in Australia. But, after their experience with Australia’s scorching summer and snakes, they moved and settled in New Zealand.
Originally, the Giesens’ plan was to establish a stone company to continue their family business, but instead they purchased land in Burnham, just outside of Christchurch, and planted vines. At that time, their vineyard was the southern most in the world, and people found it a very crazy idea. Although the brothers did have some experience with growing grapes as it was the family hobby back in Germany, they didn’t know how to make wine. One of the brothers, Marcel took the initiative to learn the wine making process and after four years he became a qualified winemaker – he then joined his brothers Alex and Theo in New Zealand.
Although many things have changed since then and they gained extensive experience, the three brothers are still heavily involved in the wine making as well as vineyard businesses. They are proud of their world class wines and believe that the joy and thrill of a new vintage is everlasting.
