Tanzania Nature

It’s not hard to understand why Tanzania is one of Africa’s most visited countries. Not only does it have big culture and friendly locals, it’s also one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Epic wildlife viewing opportunities are paired with sandy white beaches stretching into the Indian Ocean, Mount Kilimanjaro, and ancient baobab trees. Tanzania nature is a big deal.

It’d be a crime to come all the way to Tanzania and not hop on a safari tour to see the Big Five. Some of the best game viewing is found in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. Tarangire is Tanzania’s third largest national park and sanctuary, and is home to a large elephant population. Situated on the Tarangire River, this park also has stunning baobab trees. You can opt for a bush walk, as well as visiting a native tribe. Lake Manyara National Park is another option, located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. It’s considered one of the most beautiful places in Africa, and is covered in lush green vegetation. In addition to the Big Five, baboons and blue monkeys call this park home.

The Ngorongoro Crater is filled with watering holes and provides shelter for almost 30,000 animals within the slopes of the volcano. But the granddaddy of all national parks is the Serengeti, spanning over 14,000 square kilometers and home to the biggest concentration of big cats in the world. Here you’ll see savannah landscapes, mountains, dense forest, and more. You’ll have a great opportunity to see the Big Five here as well as many other animal species.

Tanzania Nature Continued...

For more Tanzania nature, Arusha National Park is a must-see. This large park has terrain ranging from open savannah to acacia scrublands to Afro-montane cloud and rain forest. The park is named for the Wa-Arusha people who live in this area. Here you’ll find the Ngurdoto Crater, Momela Lakes, the highland forest, and rugged Mount Meru. And of course along the way it’s likely you’ll run into a few friendly beasts, like buffaloes and Columbus monkeys. For something different, visit Jozani forest, boasting an eclectic biodiversity with many odd creatures.

If you want to hike up Mount Kilimanjaro, hire a local guide to safely do so. We recommend the Lemosho route, one of the less busy routes up the summit. In the nearby Lemosho Glades you may see some buffalos, elephants, and other wildlife. The best way to do it all is with a six-day trek, allowing your body to acclimatize gradually. The descent is down Mweka, on the southeast side. Lemosho is considered the most varied and beautiful of the routes because it begins in the rainforest, crosses the Shira Plateau, and then follows the Machame route. You won’t soon forget the nature in Tanzania!
