South Africa Wine Tour

With its epic safaris and romantic vistas, South Africa makes an enticing destination for any wanderer. On the southern tip of the continent, South Africa is home to big game reserves like Kruger National Park, as well as epic mountains and endless coastline. Its climate and surroundings also make for ideal wine production, and you’ll find limitless vineyards inside the Cape Winelands and beyond. The country continues to churn out award-winning wines all over the place, and now you can experience the best of it all on a South Africa wine tour.

The Cape Winelands are a historical region of South Africa. Although now the region is steeped in luxury and opulence, it’s also been a key seat of poverty and oppression. With an experienced guide, you can learn all about this area’s history while sampling excellent wines and foods along the way. The Cape Winelands are home to many biodynamic farms, as well as historical towns, eco-villages, farmers’ markets, and cultural showcases. And when it’s all paired with wine and food, you’ve got a perfect trip ahead of you.

Stellenbosch is one great destination for some walking and exploring, as well as visiting the mountains. It’s home to more than a whopping 200 wineries, and has more wine awards than any other region in South Africa. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the options, an experienced lifestyle guide will be able to help you figure out which wineries are best suited to your tastes. The Jordan Wine Estate, for example, has wine specializing in both fruity and classical tastes. Then there’s wine by South African professional golfer Ernie Els, who developed a passion for wine on his world travels and now creates his own. You can literally find everything in the Cape Winelands.

South Africa Wine Tour Continued...

Franschoek Valley Wineries is another region that makes for a great trip, and differs from Stellenbosch in size and atmosphere. It’s a smaller community here, and less touristy. It’s also near Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela was released. This part of the Winelands is known as the gourmet capital of South Africa, and for good reason. Other than wine, this area specializes in olive oils, chocolate making, and fine dining restaurants. There are 18 wine producers in this valley, with a wide range of Cap Classiques. Backsberg Estate Cellar is worth visiting, as well as Noble Hill and My Vyn. The wineries range in everything from small family-run operations to bigger, more prominent labels.

Other than Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, other important wine areas include the estates of Constantia, Durbanville, Elgin, Paarl, Somerset West, Walker Bay, and Wellington. You’ll have your work cut out for you on a South Africa wine tour! These areas are also home to many fine dining options, making for an epic wine and food pairing experience.
