Portugal Wine Tour

Portugal is increasingly becoming a popular destination, mostly in thanks to its affordable and leisurely lifestyle, amazing food, and of course, epic wine tasting possibilities. Whether you’re visiting bustling Lisbon or soaking in the solitude of the countryside, wine should make an appearance at every meal! The wine is the result of traditions brought over from ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians. Bottom line: the Portuguese have been making wine for a long time, and they’re good at it.

A Portugal wine tour will allow you to peruse some of the country’s best wines. If you’re starting out in Lisbon, the wine regions start in the west and north of the city. You’ll find a wide variety of styles and qualities, and many opportunities to taste the wines around the city itself. Wine bars are very popular, especially in the Bairro Alto area, and are often served with cheese and enchidos (cured meats and sausage).

If you’re in Porto, the cultural capital of the country, tear yourself away from the epic scenery and architecture and experience the wine. Yes, this is where port wines were born! And Porto is very famous for this reason. On a guided Portugal wine tour, you’ll try wines from the best wineries in the region. At the ancient Croft Port Wine Cellar, the oldest in the city, try a Rose, a five-year-old Ruby, and also a 10-year-old Tawny port wine. You’ll explore the wine houses in the area, where you’ll be treated to the likes of Douro Wine and Vinho Verde, accompanied by Portuguese tapas. And throughout it all, you’ll enjoy a history lesson on wine production in the area. This is a must-do for the true wine lovers out there!

Portugal Wine Tour Continued...

But for a truly immersive wine experience, you have to get out there to where the magic happens. A guide can take you to Azeitão, a region south of Lisbon famous for its cheese and wines. You can visit several of the region’s wine cellars, including José Maria da Fonseca, where you’ll find a history of winemaking that’s both fascinating and inspiring. And, of course, you’ll sample the wines! Another cellar worth visiting is Quinta de Alcube, owned by a family for over a century now. Being a traditional production cellar, it only produces 250,000 bottles a year that are sold directly to customers. How’s that for the perfect souvenir?

Also in the region are the cellars of Quinta da Bacalhôa, a more modern cellar, and Lima Fortuna, where you can sample both regional wines and cheese. Lima Fortuna also has a liqueur made from a 450-year-old recipe. To make matters even better, you’ll be doing all this exploring underneath the spectacular Arrábida National mountain range. Now who can beat an adventure like that?
