California Sightseeing

The Golden State has long been a favourite among travellers – so much so that people inevitably find themselves flocking there to live year-round. California has it all. Mountainous landscapes, insanely beautiful beaches, hip and posh cities, celebrities galore, and everything in between. On a California sightseeing tour, you’ll learn what makes this place so special.

Many travellers in California want to know what all the Hollywood glitz and glam is about. Los Angeles is the place to be. Start out by admiring the downtown architecture, including Wilshire Grand (construction site of LA’s next tallest tower), the Staples Center, Millennium Biltmore Hotel, the US Bank Tower, and LA Central Library. You’ll find this a good intro into the city’s style. To take a trip back in time, see some of the older structures like Angels Flight Railway, Grand Central Market, and the Broadway Theater District. Not so much your scene? Check out where some of your favourite movies were filmed, including 500 Days of Summer, Inception, and Transformers.

San Francisco is another trendy town to visit, and has a much different vibe than Los Angeles. Check out the buildings and grounds of the Mission Dolores, including San Francisco’s oldest, best-preserved building. See Nob Hill and its cable cars, past and present. Stroll through Chinatown. Take in the famous “Painted Ladies” – San Franciso’s colourful Victorian and Edwardian homes.

The options for California sightseeing are almost overwhelming. You can visit Silicon Valley and see the headquarters of major brands like Apple and Google. Or you can head to Catalina Island for an epic foodie tour, exploring specialty food shops and mowing down on local eats as you learn about important landmarks along the way. The farmers markets are especially worth visiting, and you’ll find no shortage of them all around the state.

Or maybe you’re more of a wine person? In California you have the opportunity to visit all types of wineries, from large commercial ones such as Sutter Home to smaller family owned wineries like Peter Cellers. Napa and Sonoma are the two most popular wine areas; however, even if you’re not a wine lover, wine country is too beautiful to miss.

When it’s time to get out and enjoy big nature, hit the Giacomini Wetlands and its many trails and viewing areas. Hear the fascinating story behind the Giacomini Ranch, and its restoration project. If you crave more excitement, try a surfing lesson in San Diego. In Marin County, walk along the main street of the picturesque town of Sausalito, or explore the hills of the Mari Headlands. There’s also, of course, Yosemite National Park and its many hiking routes and trails. Mount Hoffman, Clouds Rest, and Half Dome are especially worth hiking.

There really is endless opportunity for California sightseeing. From Santa Barbara to Palo Alto to Yosemite, discover your options by hiring a local guide.
